Did you want an annual or perennial vine? There are many wonderful clematis that will grow here...10+ feet and many blooming earlier than our morning glories do.

I used to have clematis but got bored with them so I gave them away. Maybe I'll try them again sometime, I have four trellises so I can have some variety. Annual or perennial, doesn't matter.

For annuals: purple hyacinth bean, scarlett runner bean, dancing lady bean. Fast, beautiful, easy! You can get seed for all of these beans from me in a bit--

Are your mg's in full sun? That speeds them up. I plant mine real early (mid-may), and they've been blooming since July. I've got 'Grandpa Ott', 'Cameo Elegance', 'Flying Saucers', 'Milky Way' if you need seed. Also have seed for convolvulus 'Royal Ensign' if you want a 'bush vine' for a container. Very pretty!

For perennial: definitely clematis...needs lots of sun just like the beans, though.

Thanks Elvis! I'm looking into growing beans (couldn't find anything on Dancing Lady). I did try Purple Hyacinth one year, must have started it too late, no blossoms.
My MGs are in full sun. I do like how the blossoms are above the vines, I know some are fairly hidden.

Kim, I've found that when the soil has too much nitrogen, the leaves get huge, and hide the blossoms. I try to starve mg's and marigolds a little to prevent that. I'll have lots of hyacinth bean, both white & purple, scarlett runner beans, and the dancing lady if you want to trade or sasbe in a bit. I'm pretty sure dancing lady was what the trader called them last year--but you're right, there's no info out there that I can see. The flower clusters are big and showy like the hyacinth beans (moreso than scarlett runner) and the blossoms are bright red and white.
