I have a small garden and devoted six square yards to six tomato plants. I ordered six two-part Burpee tomato cages. I went to Home Depot and bought construction cloth rolls, that 1/4" grid metal "chicken wire" stuff, two 36" x 5' rolls per tomato so that one wraps around the back and the other roll hugs the first one. Yesterday I deployed a 14' x 40' roll of bird netting so that my tomatoes now resemble some kind of military installation. This years tote board is one tomato for me and three for birds and rodents. Those devils aren't getting another one of my babies
I have:
1 "early girl" from the nursery
1 "black prince" from the farmer's market
1 bragging-rights beefsteak tomato from the nursery
1 heirloom (Caspian?)
2 Brandy Boys
plus another DOZEN cherry and grape tomatoes in five-gallon containers. It's amazing how much BIGGER the in-soil tomatoes have grown, half of them are as tall as the two-part cages, six feet!
I'm considering tieing my two cats up out near the tomatoes so that can pounce on any creature that comes near...
