Okaaaaay.... I was just curious... they are actually way too salty for my taste, and I like salt on tomatoes.

I think bootster was just joshing. Do any of our experts have an answer on this? What would cause a tomato to taste salty off the vine? Could epsom salts do this? I guess I could see Lowes including that in bagged soil...a little...

are you accustomed to the flavor of homegrown tomatoes? store bought tomatoes are generally flavorless in comparison to what we grow at home and this might be where you're getting the "salty flavor" from?

otherwise, i'd suggest that next year, you grow sweet varieties to satisfy your tastes.

We always grew tomatoes when I was growing up, and I loved them! They never tasted like this. So maybe it is just the variety. It's whatever the big box store had. Next year I'll go to a good nursery!

I noticed the same thing and I have grown tomatoes for years. I had 2 different plants turn out ..my yellow orange ones and the " bonnie". I paid for topsoil to be delivered this year and this is the 1st year I did not use miracle grow. Also 1st year I had above ground garden boxes built. I am guessing its something in the soil? I NEVER tasted a tomatoes this salty off the vine before. That's why I googled it.So I was glad to see someone else had the issue...but hoping to find the cause, and hoping they are safe to eat a bunch of. Thanks for posting

Question:

Did you spray the tomatoes with anything?

My only guess is that some kind of salt had gotten onto the tomato prior to picking. This doesn't need be sodium chloride either. Many salts can have the same affect.

I'm just wondering if it's another "taste" that just tastes like salt? Sometimes I use lemon in place of salt on food, because it sort of tastes like salt. Maybe it's not actually NaCl you're tasting, but some other acid-type thing?

This is my first year growing tomatoes (I only planted one as a whim), and my tomatoes taste salty, too. I grew a Celebrity tomato purchased at the hardware store, and nowhere have I read Celebrity tomatoes are salty. I recently read mushroom compost often contains salt. As I used mushroom compost in my potting blend, I'm going to blame it on that. Mushroom compost also often contains chalk, making the soil more alkaline. Tomatoes like pH of 6.0-6.5, and mine is higher so I have wondered if that is a contributor as well.
