Maintenance required for slate countertops?

Hi, We're in the midst of a large renovation project and are considering slate (green, from VT) for our kitchen countertops. How much maintenance does slate require? Does it scratch easily? Would appreciate info from anyone who has a slate countertop now, thanks!

Great for countertops - This was a client of mine and also a friend. She LOVES them. If is does get a scratch it is easy removed, you can just lightly buff it out. They have had granite countertops and would rather have the slate and it is not as cold - I love it!

I have seen gorgeous slate counters in the EU, mostly in Ireland. But they seem unheard of here in SW Ontario. Do you know if there is a supplier for the Great Lakes region? I have counters that are supposed to look like slate, but I want real slate. Love the look and feel, and they don't require destructive mining like granite. Ay referrals to suppliers in SW Ontario would be so appreciated.

This slate was quarried and fabricated by RMG Stone of Castleton, Vermont.
