I found an insect in my yard today that could have been an earwig. Just as an earwig would do, it was under some cardboard that had been dampened. What stumped my was that it was very big and very black. I want to say at least an inch long. The really wierd part was that it had a retractible pincher. So,when it noticed me, it curled up its' back end,a white-ish picher slowly ejected from the inside of its' tail, end and would kinda like suck it back in when it was no longer threatened.

Can anybody identify this insect for me?
