John Capinera ID'd it as Orangewinged grasshopper - Pardalophora phoenicoptera for me.
Thank you!

Who is John Capinera and how did he ID an immature hopper that was pre-wing as an Orangewinged grasshopper?

I'm not doubting John and the ID, it's just that for forum purposes, that was too quick and not enough info to educate me!

Sorry, you are right. John is an Orthoptera expert at University of Florida. He wrote the book Grasshoppers of Florida. His specific statement was "almost certainly an orangewinged grasshopper" and seeing as how I released the the specimen back to the habitat, I know that is as close as I can get anyway.
One of the things I really like about the UF department is their willingness to ID things for us amateurs.

Here is a link that might be useful: Grasshoppers of Florida

No problem; it's good to have an expert in your hip pocket. There must be a key identifying mark in that young hopper. I came across some red-winged grasshoppers a couple of summers ago that I hadn't seen in 40 years. Last summer, same place, no red-wings!
