What do you collect?

I know I'm a junkie but at Fort Bend I realized I DO collect some things more than others. So what do ya'll collect? Any new collections this year?

I continue to add to my collections of brugs, rhipsalis, crinums, cacti, succulents, gingers, bromeliads, vines, hippeastrums, clerodendrums and a couple of others.

But this year I've started collecting: exotic/rare fruits, bamboo, palms, rex begonias, ferns, durantas and more weird stuff.

I've also started collecting enablers-everyone on the bamboo forum, Ed and the rarefruit group, everyone here......

Passion vines, cannas, herbs and thanks to Carrie and Carol and my local nursery brugs and I was getting a good Salvia collection going but the rain took care of those.
Tally no way will I EVER have a *collection* like yours, lol

Beachplant, since you collect crinums, do you have the giant red leaf crinum, if you don't email me and I will send you one for postage. It grows in semi-shade, it loves the coastal weather. Barbra,

See, Jolana, we are still going to have to make that midnight run to Tally's house --- I really think we need to help her get "rid" of some of that -- too much work for her.
I am so trying to be good this season, but my friend, Patrick, just brought me 7 new brug cuttings, so guess I will be busy for a short time, anyway.

Collect? No, it's gone way beyond that. It's more like hording. When I cut something back, I have to actually force myself to throw the clippings away instead of rooting them. This is a sickness.

If you find a cure for it, JIm, please let me know.

Geez, what kind of people am I hanging around with??? HAHAHAHA

I tend to have quite a few daylilies. Only a few are named varieties, but I have more unnamed hybrids and even some that were growing out on my dad's property - an old farmhouse. You know how us gardeners can also be plant rustlers - in a good way, you know? I also collect quite a few native plants - not any one type in particular, but I am very intrigued with native plants for my garden because I have to do so little to have them look sooooo good.

I thought at first you might be asking if there's other thing's beside plants we collect LOL.
This is my first year to really hitting hard and heavy on collecting any one plant and that is daylilies. They are so easy to grow and oh so pretty. I've had a good start of salvia's but the daylilies are way ahead now. Just this summer I've collected 50 some plus daylilies, mostly named but some unnamed. I also have other types of lilies.
Before I was just trying to make my yard look good, fill in any empty bare spots with whatever would grow in full sun, part sun and full shade. I'm still struggling with some area's but hoping next year will be the best ever in my gardens.

I have some crinums and love the ones I have but don't have enough room for very many unless I just grew crinums, they take up a lot of room. I have two that have never bloomed in the two years I've had them. I moved one and need to move the other one too, see if it doesn't help it.

I have big plans and if it works out I'll be speading the gardens out inch by inch onto the eastside of the house.
This is to keep DH from having a heart attach. He does not fair well when I add onto or expand out so I have to do it ever so slowly. Most of the time anyway, other times I do it while he's at work and it done by the time he get's home and there's nothing he can do about it :)
If it was up to him the place would still be just as it was BORING no pretty plants or flowers.

I used to be bad about collecting all kinds of things but I've never started collecting plants. Thank goodness!!! My yard is running out of room.

I guess what I have the most of are plumerias, vines and brugmansias.

I try to stick to a plan but it's hard to stay focused when a bright red plant is stopping you in your tracks. Like the one I found with PJ and Jolana last spring. It was love at first sight.

Carrie, we do need to help poor Tally out. Bless her heart she has way too many plants to tend to. (I'll bring the shovel)

Too much stuff! Oh your asking about plants;), apparently I love jews. Fuzzy, green, purple, fat leaves, skinny leaves, upright, trailing...The whole family of them, from spiderworts, to tradescantias to callisia, etc. I find them fascinating!

I have some salvias, some tropicals, some herbs, some roses, some cannas, some common fruiting plants, some succulents (actually quite a few of these:), some butterfly attracting plants, some of everything. BUT I really love jews.
    CJ (self confessed jew lover:)

The question might be what don't I collect? Culinary herbs, Citrus, figs, tropical and subtropical fruit is newer one. Passion flowers, low chill fruit (apples, pears, peaches), another new one I have already indulged way to far and have farther to go is pomegranates, Blackberries, and last but not least of the newest ones is low chill grapes. My backyard looks like a nursery run amok. My neighbors call my yard the scratch and sniff garden. I prefer Le Jardin de Chaos. Yadda out.

I've got mostly salvias and natives but Carrie has me well on my way to a brug collection. Also, pretty much any plant that is marked with a deep discount. That way I can tell hubby how much I *saved* by buying that plant, LOL!

It's not hoarding if you share! And I see I forgot a few things that I'm collecting.

    PLEASE bring shovels!

Barb, some crinums won't bloom for several years after you move them.

And if it's not bad enough I've discovered several new nurseries to go to!!

I used to have approx. 200 varieties of waterlilies and 150 varieties of Louisiana irises and 100 varieties of daylilies...but I am always creating so much work for myself...I have a hard time keeping up with it all. I didn't bring most of the irises or daylilies when I moved here. Well, I did, but they didn't get replanted because my mother got sick and died.

Now, I mainly don't collect so many plants...altho I still have a lot of waterlilies. I lean towards odd ball tropicals, tropicals that can grow outside year 'round here,
antique roses, crinums, and anything for butterflies, various perennials, etc.

What I am more into collecting now are things for the garden...and always that I pick up at yard sales...('cause I am cheeep)...iron tables and chairs, planters, and plant stands. I also collect pavers and bricks, bird houses that are functional...not just for looks, and larger ones that I can use for wildlife boxes. Also bird feeders and patio lanterns, bird baths. All that sort of thing. Oh, and one of my odder collections....old concrete water troughs. I have 5 of them, so far. They are a little difficult to move...but make great rustic looking water gardens.

Here is a picture of one of my favorite plant stants...plant goes on the babe's head. This was made the day I brought it home...and I haven't put it in the garden yet. It's made out of metal and has various coats of old paint on it.

AW, Marilyn I didn't think about my collection of yard items. I too search garage sale, estate sales, flea markets. I found a framed mirror and dove stepping stone or can be hung on the wall. I placed both on the fence and I like it together. Both are white in color. The guy doing the estate sale had a fit when I walked up with the stepping stone, said he had one like it at home and had been looking for another to go with the one he has. He said he uses it as a stepping stone, so it made me glad I got it, I can't see stepping on it LOL
I have lizards, sun and moon, a cross and a few other whatnots hanging on the fence.

    Fragrant plants
Roses - especially antiques and Austins
    Michelias

marylin, that baby looks like its doing mickey mouse ears!

It is Mickey Mouse ears. lol That's a cute angel.
Marilyn, what a pretty country road.

You guys made me remember that I do collect something garden related. I have a potting shed and I started collecting small antique pieces that are the right scale to make it more like a tiny house. I have a small antique porcelain stove, a tiny old birdcage, a small hand crank wooden ice cream freezer and stuff like that. It's turned into an obsession!!! Help!!

Gingers. I am a ginger/heleconia/musa addict!I try to collect and grow citrus but nothing ever happens. From April to June I am a tomato addict. I also love small antique roses.
Off plants, I collect old pyrex/fire king/corning bowls.

I am a hibiscus addict. i have several but always looking for more. I have some other type of plants but this is the one that I collect. I really like the angel trumpets, and plumeria, but I only have 1 of each(now)LOL

Carol, I love your shed it's prefect in your yard. I'd love to have one like that but it would look out of place in my space.

Yummykaz.......OMG Do not mention Fireking around my DH, once the bug hit him, he cannot pass anything up with fireking on it. I have to remind him we've ran out of room for storing anymore.
I did get my granny's set of mugs and a few saucer's. I'm wanting to redo my kitchen to include a place to set the jadeite mugs on display.
DH complains about my taking up more space in the yard for more garden beds, While I complain about his taking hobby taking up space inside the house LOL. I made the mistake of telling him he could do what he wanted with one of the bedrooms.......I wish I could take it back cause he's filled it with his love of radios, stereos and stuff.....I can't even get in there to clean the room GRRRRRRR. Also he leaves the door open and I go behind him to close it I don't want anyone to see his mess OMG. DH is not a collector he's hoarder.

LOL Barb, one of my empty bedrooms is turning into a place for DH to put his R.C. airplanes. It started out being a cute vintage looking guestroom with a B&B theme but I haven't finished it yet and he keeps loading it up with so I don't know when it'll get finished.

Anyone that hoards should watch Oprah this Thursday evening.
The shows about a lady that has tons of junk and can't walk through her house.
It makes me think about cleaning out the garage (I said thinks). lol

I'm not even going in to what I collect besides plants! I need a bigger house though.

Natives. I love natives. I'm also becoming a water garden aholic. I really would love some concrete water gardens..... I love bogs too. PJ

pjtexgirl, do you ever visit the pond and aquatics forum? I've become an addict of waterplants myself!

bossjim, you cracked me up with your comment about forcing yourself to throw away clippings! Hahaha.

Today DH and I went to some estate sales and I found me an angel. I'll post pix later.
But I was eyeing all the leaves on the ground and some had bag's setting at the curb, I wanted to put them in the SUV so bad LOL. DH might think I've really lost it if I told him to load up the bags of leaves.

Barb, I can't wait to see your angel. Did you end up finding him at the Mitchell sale?

Carol Nope I didn't go to Millchell's sale. Their prices are to high for my pockets, unless I go to the half off day.

Again DH and I went out but this time we did garage sale and I found a bean pot with the round hanger for it. I have plans on putting my firecracker fern in it next year. Someone must have used it for plants cause it already has a hole drilled in the bottom of the pot :)

Yep! I've been to the pond forum. VERY informative if you want an all out pond. I just have a 50gal pot with Minnows and a 100 gallon bog. I have a tiny pump for the pot to recirculate water. I also have a pot with recirculating water that goes up a tube thingie. The minnows are an interesting addition but no Koi or anything like it. If I ever do get a full-on pond(too busy right now) I would probably be over at the pond forum a LOT.PJ

I really do not collect any one type of plant, I like anything that blooms. I do collect cookbooks, and Christmas village houses. Barbra,

    Water pump

    Bean pot

    Barb, your angel is precious.

That bean pot is just waiting to be filled with plants. The pump would look good near the bean pot.

I collect mostly roses, but also clematis and salvias.
And I have a bunny statue in every bed, so I guess I collect them too !

Well, we seem to need an emergeny CHAD meeting for all these junkies on here.
Saturday, closest nursery, buy, buy, buy!! Right now almost everyone is having some kind of sale & all the bulbs are in.......
And no, those are NOT plants in the back of my truck that I brought back on Sunday from the nursery in Yorktown.

I bought my first crinum this summer and I'm hooked. I could see this as the start of something.

Yeah, we all need to go to our local nurseries this Saturday. I'm notorious for being the only customer when it is cold or rainy. (Nothing like having the nursery to yourself!!)

I'm not allowed in the local nursery by myself. They told me that I start to change into something evil, kind of like changing into a werewolf.

I start breathing heavy, look dazed, and growl when someone comes over to help me...

Scars mostly. Also dogs. Got seven of them.

And compost. I would whup up on an old women if she was eye-balling some spoiled straw bales I had called dibs on.

As for exotic plants or flowers? None. I am a vegetable gardener. If I can't eat it - it is compost.

Books Books and More Books over 4000 last count going to have a sale in the spring, will let you know when Tally.

Cactus, cactus, and more cactus. I also have a nice collection of sedums and alliums going. I also was given a very nice white crinum bulb, a plumeria cutting (which has turned into a nice little tree), and various exotic seeds from Tally for postage about two years back. Thanks Tally!

Palms, a few cycads, bromeliads, aloes, tis and aroids that can survive, tried crotons but had trouble with most of them (thank heaven for Stoplight), subtropical trees, Australian plants, Argentine plants, and wouldn't mind a colony of iguanas and parrots on the property to complete out the look. Also want to get some small-footprint ornamental clumping bamboos for my place (near Brownsville). All of it is outdoors 24/7/365. I'd be into agaves too if the rhino beetles wouldn't kill every one I put out. Same with epiphytic cacti, seems the ants eat them
