aquatic insects

I have always enjoyed scooping up a bucket of water from a pond including algae and placing in an aquarium where I can see all the tiny insects in it. It is absolutely fascinating to watch the critters do their thing. Is there anyone else who has this hobby? I am wondering how to change out water without losing my insects- they go through the sieve. How can I keep it a healthy environment for them. Water boatmen are so entertaining!!

This is a great hobby, and a good way to learn about aquatic insects! I took part in a great activity at Mulock Conservation Area, in Newmarket, Ontario, that involved obtaining and observing aquatic invertebrates. It gave me a completely new perspective on nature.

A good way to change the water is to capture them from your aquarium into tiny little containers. (The smaller, the better). Then, just pour the small containers into your new supply of water.

Now, as for what they actually NEED, and whether they need you to change the water, and what kind of things they need dissolved in the water, I have no clue!

I hope I was of some help, at least!
