Storm damage, need advice!

We had a couple of nice hard rains the past two days, the first ones ALL summer, and along with it some strong winds. This morning when I went out to check on things, one of the tomato plants had fallen over, breaking the stake, and severing the stem at ground level. It fell on one of my pepper plants and broke the top half of it off too.

I tried putting a new stake in, but with the weight of all of the tomatoes, it just started to bend. I pulled off all of the tomatoes that were close to ripe, and of course quite a few green ones came off at the same time. The plant was STILL too heavy to get it to stand up, so I ended up pulling the plant out. Is there anything I can do to salvage all of the tomatoes that are still on the plant? I thought about trying to replant it deeper, but with only 3 or 4 weeks left in our growing season, I'm afraid all of its energy will be on growing new roots, instead of ripening the fruit. Should I just plan on a big batch of fried green tomatoes?

Ironically, this was my smallest plant. With the taller ones, I tied the stake to the fence for support, but didn't think it was necessary for this one since it was only about 4' tall.

Thank you in advance for your advice!

Bonnie
