Kitchen Remodel - Open Shelves

We are doing open shelves instead of upper cabinets on one side of our kitchen. We are also doing calacatta gold marble countertops that are extra thick - I think inch and a half. I want thick shelves and my cabinet designer has specified 2 1/2 inches. I think that may be too thick though. Thoughts?
