What happened?

I was too busy to start seeds this year or get to the garden center in a timely manner. I ended up planting heirloom tomatoes, ten varieties. The Ohio weather was initially too cold then too wetand finally too cold again by mid September. The output has been terrible! The plants are all diseased. The fruits are bitter when ripe and falling off prematurely. In addition,, the fruits are cracking just as they start to turn. I have collected some and tried to ripen them inside but even though they look ripe they are rotted inside. What happened? I will certainly go back to my Big Boy, Whopper, Celebrity and Sweet Millions next year. One exception is a yellow cherry tomato which was mislabelled at Walmart. It is delicious. Does anyone know what it could be?
