trade debt

Apparently we have the largest trade deficit in our history - something like 4.5% of GDP.

Typically large external debt is associated with third or second-world countries, where trying to catch up on such debt is very bad news for the environments.

But it occured to me that for a country like ours, with much higher technology and industry and much more valuable exports (I assume), a trade deficit actually means less environmental impact - right?

So long as the debt doesn't get called in all at once, importing more than we export must be better for our environment.

I stand ready for correction.
