Separate Fridge and freezer combination vs. single

Another poster has mentioned looking at separate fridge freezers and it got my wondering the disadvantages for doing that when compared to a single fridge (for higher midrange appliance level cost)
Looking at the frigidaire models that were mentioned, the fridge and freezer are each about 1400. For 2800 you would get an immense amount of storage compared to a similarly priced french door fridge (and seemingly much cheaper than getting a bigger than 36" fridge). What is the downside to getting the separates? Is it energy use? Are they always shown installed as side by side or is it "acceptable" to have them placed in different areas of the kitchen. I am collecting ideas for my kitchen remodel (3-5 year timeframe). I had a frigidaire pro fridge (and range) in my last apartment and really like them, especially for the price point.

You can place them as it suits your needs. One of the advantages of having them separate. I have Electrolux Icon units, and actually have 2 fridges and 1 freezer. I have one of the fridges by itself and the other fridge next to the freezer.

I agree that they were an excellent value compared to a fridge/freezer unit, and there is so much better room and much nicer access to the freezer compared to those that are low.

I think the biggest downside is space. Not everyone has room for 2 such large appliances where they could have one in a similar-sized space.

Just an aside, we left room to change to a 36" version in case we ever want to, and just put trim around to make the appliances look more fitted.

A friend has the Kenmore version. She happened to have a recess that fit both of them. When one broke down (fridge), the freezer was of course still working, so she didn't loose both.

FYI: they are counter depth.

I wanted one fridge and one freezer but needed the fridge to be left-hinged. It doesn't exist except in really high price models. Mid-range and lower end are all right-hinged. The freezer is left-hinged but I don't want them next to each other and if I used a right-hinged fridge I would have to closet the door in order to get to the counter landing-spot. I currently have 2 18 cuft bottom freezer fridges - identical except for hinges. It is 60" of total fridge/freezer. A huge amount for us now that the kids are gone so I want to replace it with something smaller. I will have to go with a French door because of the handedness problem. And I will still need a separate freezer as well, because one bottom freezer is not enough. I do wish the doors were reversible the way they all used to be!
