Bottom Freezers...Do You Have a 2nd Fridge or Freezer?

Emergency fridge purchase here! I'm x-posting from the Kitchen Forum:

Will be looking for a new fridge this weekend. Seems like everyone loves their bottom freezers. My daughter has had one for a couple years so I called her to see how she compares it to a side x side. She said she likes it but ONLY because she has a deep freeze in the garage. If that was her only freezer, she'd hate it. She'd have to dig to find things and she said my sxs freezer has more room than her bottom freezer. When I told her how much everyone seems to like their bottom freezers she said "ask them if they have a 2nd freezer. So, those of you that have a bottom freezer, do you have more freezer space elsewhere? Do you find it harder or easier to get to things than a sxs?

I have a bottom freezer, which I love because it is sooo spacious, however, yes, I have a second freezer(a chest freezer). My husband is a hunter, I freeze alot of stuff from my garden, I buy a couple of turkeys when they go on sale, then there are the Costco runs.....

Bottom freezers have like zero room, especially in a counter depth model..actually pathetic. A turkey you would have issues storing without a second freezer. You would need to dump everything out and totally reorganize to get it to fit. And the top shelf that pulls out fits very little. I actually liked my top freezer better with the bottom fridge.

If you read the specs the s x s do have more freezer space. I was set on buying CD FD until I started to do the research. I love how the FD refs. look but, for us, the s x s seems to make more sense. Guess it depends on your family. We are 2 seniors so don't need freezer space to fit pizza boxes (we make our own pizza). We shop for fresh fruits and vegs. several times a week. So we don't need the bigger space of the fresh food part of the ref. When we both worked we shopped once a week. When we were first married had a top freezer ref. and I hated trying to find things up there. FD is same, just freezer on bottom instead of top. So my advice is to take a look at your family composition, your shopping habits, and then get what you feel works best for your family. Like I said, I think the FD is better looking but s x s works best for us! Good luck!!

I never liked my SxS fridge, I love the bottom freezer (KitchenAid, incredibly quiet), it makes so much more sense. I've always had a freezer, with three kids I couldn't have gotten along with out it. Now, even though it's just me, I still have a freezer, though much smaller, and it was sure handy with the grandchildren staying here over the holidays. Sometimes it's full to the brim, sometimes not so full, but always useful.

Love my bottom freezer too! Lots more room than my old top freezer and wouldn't even consider a SxS. Two people here. I keep the freezer pretty well full, but will have to work on that before hurricane season starts!

New owner of a CD bottom freezer. Love the fridge part as it's extra tall and easy to organize. Bottom freezer is okay but I still have my old top freezer/fridge and will be keeping it until I can replace it with UC fridge/freezer drawers in my entertainment center. Had a sxs for ten years that came with the house. Never liked it, neither side was just right.

I never had a sxs so I can't comment on that other than to me they seem narrow when reaching in for food. If you don't like a top or bottom freezer, you'll have both with a sxs.

What I like better than having the freezer on the bottom is having the refrigerator on top. The freezer on the bottom is easy to use with the pull out baskets and storage underneath.

We kept our old refrigerator and put it in the laundry room that is close by and I have an upright freezer in the garage (in a separate building and not close by). But, I freeze veggies from the garden and buy large amounts of meat when it's on sale. Even if we didn't have the other two places for frozen food, I still would have chosen the FD model.

I have a bottom drawer freezer now for 3 years (not counter depth: is the LG 33" wide French Door SS Refrigerator with the Water on the door and the ice in the freezer.). I had to take the ice out of the freezer needing more room so I wish I went with the 36" wide but my refrigerator has more room than my smaller Whirlpool that had a top freezer that I could never read deep enough in. I love how easy it is for me to find everything in my freezer since I am very petite and this is the best set-up for me. I wish I had a 36" counter depth with no water on the door refrigerator for looks that will give me about the same amount of space.

Thanks everyone. If you're reading the Kitchen Forum too, you know that DH totally surprised me with his (fix it or buy new) decision and chose to fix our refrigerator. That's ok but boy was I surprised. Three hours of research for nothing. Good news is the Caribbean cruise is still on for next month. Sometimes DH knows what I need more than I know what I need :)
