It fit so perfectly in our old house with all the white trim and whitewashed ceilings, but stands out like a sore thumb here.
creeser, that's a great idea, paint the inside a darker color and the outside a more beige-y white!
I wonder if I could use something to "antique" the white to make it more of that beige-y color? Be easier than painting the whole thing, especially since it's a high gloss white.
I wasn't going to say anything, creeser, because I thought there might be more stark white accents in other parts of the room that I couldn't see and that the bookcase might be echoing, but if this isn't the case, I strongly agree with Bobbi that it would benefit from a repainting that brought the tones into more harmony with the muted browns, beiges and ivories of the rest of the room. Ideally, I'd put a slightly smaller work of art over it as well. The original artwork, minus the clock but with some smaller decorative accessories on the top of the bookshelf, seems more in balance to me.

But you guys are all much too addicted to knowing what time it is. I avoid clocks as much as possible (phones too) as I don't like to be reminded that time is passing or I'm supposed to be somewhere.

Love the wooden goose (duck? swan?)!
creeser, take some sandpaper and rough it up, then water down some beige paint and rub it over the unit with a rag. Of course you'll have to reseal it again with a clear coat, but I wouldn't choose high gloss, more like a satin or eggshell, because your room is too rustic for high gloss.
feeny, yes, the painting is wider than the white cabinet. That bothered me as well.
My Dad collects old clocks, so I grew up with 'time' all around me. I'm lost without a clock in a room.
It's a goose.. I think.. and thank you! I had to whine for 2 years before my mother gave it to me. *L*
  • 14 years ago
That was my thought, too. "Antique" the outside of the white cabinet In a color to compliment the artwork you have planned to place above it, and the pretty floors and ceiling in the room. Paint the inside to show off whatever you will display in there.

If you want to go "over the top" install strip "warm" LED lights inside the cabinet!
Huh! Whine for two years...interesting...I want a Keurig coffee maker for my birthday so if whining works I will def try that. Although I just got a new fridge so probably not!!! I am good at whining, tho.
agreed the white color doesn't fit in the room....i think i might even paint it a darker color than the beigey-white! Do you have burgundy or something in your curtains, etc...i say go darker since the couch and walls are light. What other colors besides browns are we looking at here? my monitor at work kinda sucks. What about painting it a dark color on the outside and maybe a brownish color on the inside (woodsy)....or putting mirror inside on the back wall of it?
If you feel odd about painting it drastically...could it live in another room altogether? and put something else on that wall?
creeser, if the three paintings have a common color, why not choose it for the white cabinet? And I think if you're going to put all three over that cabinet, do it in a triangle with the point at the top.
I have this pie safe in the hall. I could switch it out with the white cabinet. It's 6 feet high, so I'd have to hang the painting beside it instead of above it.
Whining, eh? Have to work on my technique. I just drop heavy handed hints.
oh yea bob....how's the new fridge??? do you love it!?
Ooh, love the pie safe. Can you at least try it there? The wood will go so much better with the rest of the room, but I can't tell about the effect of the height without seeing it.
feeny, same here, I need to see it. I'll have to wait to get help moving it. I'll end up scratching the heck out of my floors if I try to slide it down the hall to the living room. It's narrower than the white cabinet. by about 15 inches. If I put it towards the corner of that wall, the window on the other end should balance it, wouldn't you agree?
Then I could hang monster painting a little lower, but centered between the two.
Not sure what you mean by the corner of the wall, but I agree that it will help having the tall window to balance it. But I am never great at visualizing effects and always have to lay things out in the room itself to see them. But absolutely do not move it yourself. No rush.
If you look at the photo I posted along with the one of our ceiling, where the white cabinet is to the left and the window is further down on the right. I was thinking of putting the pie safe where the white cabinet is in the photo and centering the painting.
I love that pie safe! Why were you hiding it?

Mendi, I love my fridge! It's so cool, it makes ice! And it's bigger. I know you all have ice makers but I didn't so I'm thrilled! But I never looked to see what brand it is! Brands don't matter to me, it's what I can afford that counts.
I hid it in the hallway Bobbi! It's been begging to come in the living room, I think.
Bobbi, I did not have an ice maker for a good 10 years until we moved out here and got the new fridge. I feel your joy!
    Thank you!
cresser, oh yes, the pie safe will be a much better piece or furniture for the living room than the white cabinet.
I have this old barrister's bookcase as well. It's the same dark wood as the pie safe and the same height.
creeser, have we taught you nothing? These are both great pieces!
i totally agree!! yay on the pie safe in the living room! Maybe a painting on each side of the pie safe and not hung too high!

bobbi, glad you are lovin it!
You have Bobbi! That's why this came to mind. Each section is separate and I can move this myself. *L*
  • 14 years ago
    Thanks!
Ok, but just be careful, ok?
Thank you ladies! White cabinet has to stand in the hall until I get her painted and pie safe or bookcase are making their way to the living room. Hubby is so going to love me when he gets home and instead of supper, he gets to move furniture. *L*
  • 14 years ago
wow...then basically you have 2 other pieces to replace the white cabinet on one wall and you could put the bookcase on the opposite wall where the trunk is! how marvelous! you have 4 paintings, right? so what about stacking 2 vertically beside each piece of furniture on each wall, but with one with the furniture first and one with the paintings first. Making them opposites when you enter that room. Does that make sense? And I noticed something else....what is that little tripod black thingy by the recliner?
omg...i just saw the pup! lol...he matches the couch all too well!
and I just saw something else...maybe you could put one of the pieces of furniture caddy-corner, in the corner to the left of where the white cabinet is now. I just noticed the partial wall coming out. If not that, flat against that short wall, and putting the trunk along the wall attached and hanging 1 or 2 paintings stacked above it???
mpousom, that tripod is a light. The legs and center can extend so you could have a short floor lamp or a table lamp. I'm still trying to find a home for that, too. *L*
I get exactly what you're saying about bookcase and pie safe on opposite walls. Oh that really appeals to my sense of balance.
I have way too many prints for the walls. It was an addiction for a while and we have a lot of really talented local artists. Plus, I love photography and have framed several of my photos.
These last few days I am always a day late and a dollar short…so jumping in.

creeser, what if you moved the white cabinet farther to the left and put the swan on top and the jugs in the cabinet. The three pix you have leaning against the wall have white matting. Could you hang those three one atop the other next to the white cabinet and would the height correspond to the cabinet with the swan? Then your sofa table could go on the other wall with the darker pix over that and if those two lights are being replaced could they go on the table on either side of the picture?
judyg, thank you! I've actually managed to get my white cabinet moved to the opposite wall and centered just to see if I like it before moving it to the hall. I'm going to try some of your suggestions with it on that wall and see how it balances out before I ban it to the hallway. I still agree it needs a paint job to match the new house.
Moved the white cabinet to the opposite wall, hung the different prints around it, topped it with the goose, and replaced the goose with the terrarium. I'm not sure I won't leave the wall with the painting like it is for a while and see if the pie safe tells me it wants to be there with it of if there is something yet unknown that wants to go there.
I still am going to repaint or at least antique over the white cabinet to make it darker... like tea staining... just not today. *L*
  • 14 years ago
Just re-joining in, had to have my happy-nappy. I like it creeser! It looks good!
Thanks Bobbi! It's better. I'm ready to get everything "just right". Son is graduating from college in about 6 weeks and we're going to have him a surprise party.
    Oh how fun! Take pictures!
Always do! I'm a camera bug.
The three pix with the white matting look god with the white piece.
Thanks judyg! They seem to work a lot better than the oil painting. It might be because I'm getting lazy at the end of the day, but the white doesn't seem so stark with that grouping.
    We olldies are so good.
    creeser has worked hard today!

Just an idea for moving the pie safe. Dust mop the "path" you will be using. Put a thick bath towel under the piece and slide it over to the new position.

The barrister's bookcase is another treasure!

Question: has anyone tried the method of getting paint off hardware by "cooking" it in a crockpot on medium with water and dish soap overnight? I have some hinges and strike plates in my apartment that are needing cleanup. Strike plates aren't too expensive to replace, but door hinges are beyond my budget. I may be needing to replace the round doorknobs with levers to accommodate for severe arthritis in my fingers. Just trying to make things pretty...
tipi, never heard of that one, if it's oil based paint I doubt that would work. Paint remover isn't expensive, maybe $5-$10, just brush it on and let it sit (wear gloves) then wipe it off. I'm not talking about paint thinner, it's paint remover.

I saw the method on This Old House, and it is easy to find this method described online. Just have to buy a cruddy old crockpot to use, or else a crockpot liner. I am pretty sure the paint splatters are latex paint, except for one door, which has oil base over latex paint splatter. I guess I will need to but some paint remover for those hinges.
Thank you for your helpful advice, and your kindness. tipi
  • 14 years ago
tipi, go for it!!! If it works, what a savings, hinges aren't cheap!
tipi, thanks for the idea. I have an old blanket I use to put under furniture when I move them around. All that work and neither my son, nor my husband noticed when they came in! My son comes for dinner every night and I asked them both (separately), "how do you like the new arrangement in the living room?" Both looked and looked and finally asked "What did you do?" So today, when they get in, they get to move the pie safe.
Ah, men......bet they'd notice if you moved the recliner, huh?
    LMBO, absolutely they would!
