Poor lighting but want rich colors

Our upstairs has no overhead lighting which means the rooms are dark. Lamps just don't seem to help! We want darker colors but are afraid it will be too dark. Help! I have my eyes set on BM Silver Fox, Timberwolf, or Nightengale but they appear so dark! I'm afraid our upstairs will look like a cave. Any suggestions for a rich color that isn't too dark? I'm tired of Manchester tan which I seem to have all over the house. Thanks for any suggestions!

    Can you add a skylight? Or have an electrician come in and wire some overhead lighting for you? Or perhaps swag a chandelier to the center of the room? Then you could have all the rich colors you love.
