Sheila, I think you'll find the ceiling fan a god send in the summer. I'd much rather have a chandelier in my bedroom but I can't live without the air moving in July even tho I have central air! And I have never seen a combo fan/chandelier that wasn't hideous. Rhonda is right on with her advice.

We just went through this exact debate. I hate the look of 99% of the ceiling fans out there (including the one that was in our bedroom for years). Finally found one that was modern, simple, and with a low enough profile. We installed it two months ago and it is a big improvement.

feeny, nice fan, but without pictures of the whole room I don't think we can truly understand it. hehe Sheila, personally I think ceiling fans are a blessing in the heat. But do get one with a remote, you'll be surprised how handy those remotes can be.

Just a comment - I had my fan hardwired to a wall switch. It has a round control that clicks to 3 positions to control the speed. One less remote around the house!

PH, do you have to get out of bed to work it, or is it close to the bed?

It's right by the door. I turn it on when I enter and off when I leave.

try going to your local hardware or online and look for retractable ceiling fan. the fan blades retract into the middle portion and comes in wood styling, chrome modern style and even traditional styling. i dont have existing picture but its got a remote switch so that should suit your needs. try googling it.

Minka Lavery has some nice fans with remote controls.

Yes, Minka seems to be the fan of choice for several Houzz Designers. My iPad is a bit finicky on how it will allow me to attach photos. I went to the Products tab at the top of the screen and entered "ceiling fans."
