Vent for Wolf 36 Rangetop

We are purchasing a 36" Wolf Rangetop with 6 burners. Our appliance guy recommended the following vents. I would like to vent out the back and have cabinets above, rather than have a chimney style hood. Please let me know what your opinion is:

Best hood model K210A, 10 inch high can be vented straight back. Hood $650 800 cfm blower model P8 $450

Ventahood model PRH9263SS 9 inch high can be back vented 600 cfm hood with blower $1250

Broan model E6436SS 10 inch high, 600 cfm $595 can be rear vented

Zephyr model AK7036AS 10 inch high 600 cfm $850 can be rear vented

Right now we don't even have a vent, so anything will be an improvement. I don't need a monstrosity. I would like it fairly easy to clean.

Out of the hoods you've listed, I would pick the Best K210A, and here's why:

The Wolf rangetop RT366 with six burners has a total of 96,000 btu's (16,000 per burner). Ideally then, your hood should have 960 cfms, or rounded up, 1000 cfms. That is "ideal", and of course you may have to compromise. Though it's always better to have more cfms than less, cause you can always use the lower setting, but still have the higher setting when you are frying or do something smokey. Also, it will be quieter to have a 1000 cfm fan used mostly on the lower setting, than to have a 600 cfm fan that needs to be on its highest setting all the time. Given that, I would pick the Best K210A because it has the most cfm's (800) of the choices you've listed.

Another way to increase your exhaust capability is to have the hood be wider than the range by 6" (i.e. 3" on either side). Again, that would be the ideal arrangement, but many people don't have the space for that. It would be great if you could get a 42" hood for your 36" range, but I believe all the choices you've listed are 36" wide. It's a nice look to have the 42" hood over a 36" range, but your cabinetry may not be set up for that. I am just trying to give you the ways to make your exhaust more efficient.

Another way to make your exhaust more efficient is to have it be deeper than the 22" depth of the hoods you've listed. If you can find one 24" deep it would be better, but as I said, it's just another option to increase the efficiency of your hood, and the 22" depth would work OK too.

Regarding cleanability, baffle filters are better than mesh, because mesh get clogged with grease much more quickly. I believe the Best K210A you've listed has baffle filters. The VAH brand has had widely differing reports as to its cleanability with some saying its blower wheel is much harder to clean and some saying it's easier. Given that "controversy" I'd just steer clear of VAH.

It is important to realize that your ductwork will have a great effect on the efficiency and noise level of your hood, regardless of which model you pick. Try to have ductwork that is as short a run to the outside as possible, and with as few turns as possible. Check the specs of the hoods you are looking at for their duct diameter requirements. Some may need 10" diameter or 8" diameter duct. If your duct diameter is smaller than that, you will get much more noise and less exhaust power, and may even affect the hood's warranty.

We are on an outside wall, so we can vent directly to the outside. Will it be noisier if we vent horizontal rather than chimney style?

I doubt we will ever use all 6 burners full blast at once. I would also prefer not to expand the width of the vent if possible, unless its a major faux pas.

Otherwise, can you recommend a model? I'm open to almost anything but don't want to spend a fortune.

    Thanks for your help!

As I said several times in my post, your Best K210A is the one I'd recommend given your parameters. If you want to spend more money, you could look at the hoods by Independent Inc. which is the manufacturer who used to manufacture the Wolf hoods before Wolf decided to make their own hoods a few years ago.

I have a Wolf 6 open burner rangetop and Best by Broan hood.
K260A36ss with in line blower P9. I love it. It takes care of any smoke or smells that we get from cooking. You can't even smell fish in the house. To clean, I simply put the baffles in the dish washer and wipe the hood. And it is so quite I don't even realize that it is on. I don't think you will regret getting the Best by Broan.

Alwaysfixin, I meant a different one, if you felt that was superior. I didn't want you to think I didn't read your post careful! I'll look into the other brand.

    Thanks kalapointer!

    Dear Saw50st8,

We thought that we could offer some assistance to you. On a Wolf 36" wide rangetop, we recommend a minimum 900 CFM blower. A 36" wide ventilation hood is the minimum recommendation, while a 42" wide or similar hood will offer more capture area. You can find additional information on our ventilation recommendations via the provided link to our Ventilation Guide.

Not really sure. I had looked at the Zephyr Tempest I model for a 36" range before moving on to Tempest II hood, with an 1100 cfm blower. That offers a bigger capture area, as well as a more powerful blower, but it's likely too tall to be installed under a cabinet, as you'd like. But the model you're looking at can be ordered with a 1000 cfm blower, no? My recollection is that the up-charge for the larger blower is not very great (it's not a big difference on the Tempest II). If you like the hood, might that be a way to go?
