Cubby for microwave

Say I alter an existing cabinet to make a cubby for countertop microwave. Do I still need to purchase a trim kit for the microwave? Do the trim kits provide for ventilation? The MW is deeper than the cabinets and will stick out about 4". Will that make the trim kits useless to me?

Don't know, but I'm interested to hear the answer!

I am kind of confused between the difference between a built-in micro vs. a cabinet for a microwave (ours will be placed in the island). I keep forgetting to ask my KD about this.

If the micro sticks out, you can't use a trim kit. If you can figure out a way to make it even with the surrounding cabinets, yes, the trim kits include a ventilation grill.
