garage refrigerator

I am looking for an extra refrigerator for the garage.

Many stores have told me that it won't work in the

garage properly due to fluctuation in temperature.

What makes do you have (GE, Amana, Frigidaire) and

have you had any problems.

Thank you

Whirlpool sells a refrigerator specifically for garage use, called the Chillerator, part of their GarageWorks product line. There's also the Freezerator, which is two-compartment freezer (like a top-freezer 'fridge). The top 6 cu ft section is convertible between refrigerator and freezer functions. Both are rather much expensive.

I have a 15-years-old KitchenAid/(Whirlpool) top-freezer unit in my garage, does fine ... but winters here don't get below freezing much.

We've had a Roper in the garage for over 11 years with no problems. We keep mostly drinks in there along with extra stuff in the freezer. And, actually the more I think about it, the freezer is better than the more expensive KA in our kitchen! The KA freezer turns ice cream into solid rock (long story re: a fix for it...no doubt when we move it's staying here!). But, the cheap crappy Roper has been perfect in the garage since we moved in 11 years ago! (so, maybe it's not as crappy as I say it is! :)

We have our GE Profile side-by-side in the garage. No problem with either frig or freezer using it out there. We replaced it in the kitchen because of icemaker problems, but of course don't have that hooked up in garage, so it works perfectly out there. I sure wouldn't get talked into buying something expensive for garage use.

wendela you have to know what your garage temperature is like in winter before you can hope to turn others' experience into anything useful for you.

We put our old Whirlpool fridge (SXS) in the garage. It sits against an interior wall, and has been fine so far (almost 4 years).

From New England + drafty garage doors! We've had two refrigerators in the garage over the past 12 years. They've worked just fine (we did not hook up the water lines, though). So, I would be loathe to pay for a special garage refrigerator.

The first was a Sears freezer-on-the-top that came with the house. As a test, we moved it out to the garage when we bought a new SxS. The Sears worked just fine. So when we bought a Samsung FD a year ago, we recycled the Sears and put the KA SxS out in the garage. Again, it's worked well in that environment. We've since added an upright freezer in the garage.

Because we access the garage refrig less frequently, food seems to stay colder, but that's the only noticeable difference.

BTW, the refrigerators have always been against the "interior" wall and about halfway back from the garage doors, so that may have some impact.

We have had a Whirlpool top-freezer unit in the garage for about 7 years (the unit itself is about 15-16 years old) and have had no problems whatsoever. We are in SE PA, with very cold winters and hot summers, but the fridge is on an interior wall on the opposite side of the garage doors.

When we do our upcoming kitchen renovation, we were planning to move our current Kenmore SxS out to the garage, relacing the older Whirlpool.

On a related note -- when we move the SxS out the garage, is there any way safely to hook up the water line for the dispenser (insulating the water line, etc.)? While it's certainly not essential, we thought it might be nice for the boys playing basketball in the driveway to be able to pop into the garage for water.

I have been shopping for and reading about garage refrigerators and from my understanding most manufactures have an optional kit for putting refrigerators in garages.

Here is a link that might be useful: Garage refrigerator kit
