interior door stops

Do you have them/plan on having them? I think it will be a good idea for me knowing how my girls love to whip open doors :) which kind do you prefer - hinge style or baseboard?? I am also trying to find them in ORB to match the hardware. Thanks for any input!

    Hi,

In a nutshell you will need them. As we neared the end of our build, we had holes in the walls where the door handles were.

    1) Hinge style. Near the hinges piece of metal. Mechanically the weekest. Not recomended. Puts lots of strain on stopper, hinges and door.

    2) Bar sticking out from base board / or door. Better mechanically in that you have the better mechanical advantage lever wise. Disadvantage is that they will break stuff up if you ever step on one by accident. Advantage in that they can be quite high up (2-3 inches from the floor), so good if your door has quite alot of clearance, or too much clearance between the floor and the door for type 3 stoppers.

    3) Stub screwed into the floor. Best I think mechanically and most sturdy. Disadvantage is that your door has to sweep close to the floor. If not, then the door may sweep right over these ones. Quite attractive and discreet.

    4) Rubber bung mounted on wall right by the door handle. Most robust mechanically. Leverage wise it is good. Away from hinges. Also about the middle of the door in height. Disadvantage is they look bad in that you have a rubber dot on your wall.

    OK that's my two cents.

    Best, Mike.

Gee, Mike sure knows his hinges. I wish I would have asked this question and gotten him to answer. We did not want hinge doorstops because at our old house we had them and it made indentations in the door where it hit. We now have doorstops on the baseboards and it works just fine.

My DH walked in the door last night with ORB ones that stick out from the baseboard like #2 in Mike's examples. He got them at Home Depot. Just thought I'd let you know.

Mike didn't mention, but one slight thing to consider is that it's easier to clean/vac floors if the stop is baseboard type rather than screw-in. I've never had anyone (not even the toddlers) step on the baseboard-types; but I cuss every time I have to change vac nozzles to clean behind the floor-type. Be sure the baseboard type is set *higher* than the top of the vac, and it will be a convenience instead of a pain in the hose.

The same type that mounts to the baseboard you can mount on the top corner of the door instead. Wont get stepped on and you never notice it being there.

The problem with that is a hard-swung door by a kid can easily punch that stopper right into the sheet rock, but not thru the baseboard.
