I have the exact problem. Try to make the decision not to have the table centered seem deliberate. How about a bench on the wall? Then it wouldn't seem just a little off-center. Could the table run in the other direction, and recenter it away from your new bar area? A thinner table would also help visually. In the end you have to live with it. Once your bar is in, move the table around a bit, find what works for your family. Once you're sure and have lived with it for a while, then move the lighting fixture.

thanks for the suggestions. The dining room table and chairs are my grandmothers...sentimental but my daughter said she would take them. Then maybe we can get a more narrow table. Do you mean use a bench for seating at the table?
