I can't see how extension jambs would prevent the door from opening. I have one and the door opens fine - 175 degrees until it hits the opposite wall.

I'm really hoping that my jamb extension kit is for the outside of the door. I didn't even think to check which side it went on, but Casey's post has me all nervous about it now. David, I'm assuming you have what I hope I have, a jamb extension that goes on the outside of an inswing door.

On an exterior door extension jambs get attached on the inside, not the outside (because the threshold is not extensible) and unless they are splayed at an angle, (usually not possible unless planned for in the framing stage) the door hits the extensions (2" deep in this case) because the hinge leaves are not also 2" deeper. You can't easily substitute extra deep hinges (although they do make them) because it changes the geometry of the swing in such a way that the door edge may strike the latch side of the jambs; with a wooden door, this can be remedied by beveling the edge a bit more, with a steel or fiberglass door, it's just not doable.

The kits come with a sill extension as well and the jamb extensions always attach to the outside. Exterior doors should be inswing for many reasons. mainly to keep water outside. an extension should not hinder the door in any way, in fact it will allow the door to open properly since the hinges are on the inside. mounting an extension on the inside would push the door to the front and interfere with the swing of the door and hinges. to mount an extension on an exterior door you need to remove the brick mould first. cut the upper style to fit your specific door width. attach it to the existing jamb. cut the aluminum sill to the proper width as well and slide it on to the existing sill. nail or screw the brick mould back on and then mount the door,shim, plumb and square as usual.
