Simple summer'ish' table setting

I hate to go after Lynn's cute Franciscan apple table but I finally put together a table setting AND took pics! So, here goes. I wanted to keep everything simple since the placemats are so busy. You have all seen the dishes here before. I got the little apple bowls from Kohls on clearance. I made the placemats a couple of years ago. The napkins I made for this setting. The napkin rings are from the after christmas sale at Pier-1. :) Missing silverware in the pics again!

The basket is for bread and I was serving a curry in the red pan on the other side.

The centerpiece is also pretty simple - the red glass pot thing was a handmade gift from one of our friends and the apple is a salt/pepper shaker that I could only get one of. :) Any ideas on how to improve the centerpiece?

I love the apples. This is very summery. That red and blue vase on the mirror is very pretty. Nice job Mo.

You MADE those placemats?!! Very clever. I've never seen that done before. I may have to copy that idea for some future event. They really add interest to a tablesetting.
So give, what are the measurements? Is the red 1/3 the total width? More info. please.

Like the wavy white plates too.

Out side of forgetting your flatware...(lol), Your table looks really nice!!

I like how you made your placemats (cute pattern) with the two different fabrics. I like the look. You always do such nice sewing projects for your tables.
I also like those red dishes and those little apple plates are so adorable. Everything looks very festive...Nice job.

Thanks PD. I like the vase a lot too; it was given to us by one of my husband's profs when he was visiting us (he stayed with us the first day we moved into our new house, poor guy!). He recently passed away so it has an even more special meaning to us.

OA, I thought the apples fabric would be overwhelming if the whole placemat was made with only that fabric; thats why I added the red. Also, the apples fabric is one of my fav. fabric ever so I am stingy with it. LOL. You are right - the red is about a third of the width. This is one of the first sets of placemats I made and its reversible. :) I use the other side for fall. This is the other side of the placemat.

Thanks Jane. I am trying to merge two of my interests with the sewing and tablesetting. LOL. Any excuse to sew something.

So let me get this straight. The other side of the apple placemat is the brown fall placemat. Now that's a good idea. I use a lot of placemats and they're beginning to take up too much space.
Can you please tell me the approximate wide and length of your placemat? It looks a little larger than usual, which I like.

Mo, do you mind my asking, what size is that wine glass you have in this last tablesetting? I've been looking at some similar on Amazon...but I'm not sure of the size. Thanks.

I like this Fall tablesetting...I like the contrast of the colors with the wood of your table..very nice.

Gosh, arent you guys on the East coast? I cant believe you guys are still up and posting!

OA, the placemats are 17"x12". I didnt realise it was larger than the usual size!

Jane, the wine glass is the about 8" tall. Its my one and only Waterford set - so its their standard wine glass size.

OMG Mo, I love your placemats! Are they hard to sew? I'm so tired of trying to find the right placemats for my tables. I'd love to be able to sew my own, as there are so many great fabrics out there. I can see why you love that fruit fabric; it's so cute and very Fifty-ish.
As for any suggestions, you might try looking for a very low wicker tray or basket to set your centerpiece things in. It might give the table a softer look than the mirror. Just a thought. BTW, I really like your table with the black plates. I've always been hesitant to buy any black dinnerware myself, as I wasn't sure how to pull off a table using them. But, yours is wonderful! The glass salad plates and crytal stemware are great with them!

    Lynn,
Placemats are the easiest to sew, seriously! Nothing but straight lines. If you want directions, I can send you some good links.

Ohh, I never thought of wicker to go with this centerpiece. I will have to try it tonight. I left the centerpiece and placemats on the table to stay for a while.

DH picked out that black setting when we had our house warming parties - he is a very black & white, no patterns person. LOL.

    OA & Lynn,

    http://twinmommyproductions.blogspot.com/2007/10/patchwork-placemat-tutorial.html

This is the same technique I use - except for the patchwork, of course.

    http://winkdesigns.typepad.com/photos/make_an_easy_patchwork_pl/img_0839.html

This website has pictures for each step - although it makes it sound a little more tedious.

    Enjoy!!

Kathleen - I mostly make the placemats and napkins I use unless the placemat is bamboo or something like that. :) I dont have the knack for matching disparate things like you do, LOL.

Mo, thanks for the links! I can't wait to make a few sets of placemats and napkins of my own. I wish you lived close by as I have lots of ideas for these kinds of things, but my sewing talent is minimal. We could've gone into business together ;^P !

PS: Is Mohana your real name?

    Lynn,
My sewing talent is minimal too - you will realize that when you start making your own placemats.

Yes, Mohana is my real name - but my friends call me Mo and my family calls me by a different nickname. So Mohana is actually my work name. I must have gotten work email and this message confused. :)

Really neat that you can make your own placemats and napkins! That opens the door to being able to make them to go with most any dishes you might find. And it is so cool that you thought to make them reversible! ;o) I MIGHT be able to sew some, but I'm not very good at doing "multiples" of anything! LOL

Your little apple dishes are so cute, and I too love the curly white plates.
