It's a Miele patent, and it hasn't expired yet.

[Pssst. It's money well spent. We have a Miele in one house with the drawer, and love it. Just put an Electrolux in another and though we like the Electrolux even more in most regards, we miss the cutlery tray. It's so much faster to load and unload, spoons don't nestle, knives don't nick, and it's a great place for odd small items like prep bowls, garlic presses, egg cups, the iMelonballer, etc.

spewey - I don't think that's the case.

Asko also has a small cutlery tray/basket and so does Kitchen Aid. I think KA's new generation top of the range even has a full width tray just like the Miele.

The Miele patent has indeed expired.

Asko dishwasher have a small tray for knives and - on their XXL dishwashers - an extra basket for utensils in between the upper and lower rack -> see animation here.

KitchenAid have what they call a Culinary Tool Rack on some of their models.

LG used to offer the LDF9810 that also has a cutlery tray. It's now discontinued but seems still available online.

Thanks for the updates. I knew Asko had had small, partial trays in the past, but the new system seems awesome. The LG tray seems very much like the one on the Mieles.

It's a great idea, and hopefully which catch on further.

I have a miele with teh cutlery drawer. But it which just fried its motor and electronics due to leakage from the tub to the electronics underneath.

Its been an intensely annoying machine for the last 8 years with this same recurrent fault despite Miele's extra ordinary post warranty support.

My wife loves it though......

The Asko XXL looks great but it costs MORE than the Miele

Depends on which Miele you're talking about: I see an online price for the Asko of as low as $1600. The Miele La Perla runs in the $2200 range.

My KitchenAid has this. I wrote about it in another thread. See link below.
