Need help and ideas for redoing an 1860 kitchen

Need ideas for redoing an 1860 kitchen that has some very minor updating -- all cabinets need to be replaced as well as counter tops. It needs a pantry. The only thing remaining is the original - and wonderful - wood floors.

I am just beginning to use Houzz. I will post some pictures soon. We will be taking kitchen down to four walls and the only things we have "updated" are the range and the fridge. Everything else, except for the floors, will have to go. Kitchen is very large - the house is "dog trot" style. We will actually be redoing the entire house - exterior as well. Because of the expense and desire to cash flow, we will do it in stages, beginning with kitchen and 2 bathrooms. We have made the decision not to "restore" because of the cost, but would like our remodeling to reflect period of the house.

Looking forward to the photos and a sketch of window/ door placement if you can. I had the pleasure of putting a new kitchen in an "old" home and we paid particular attention to molding detail to keep some of the home's traditional character. Also attached are some photos of a new bath in an "old" home with molding details reflecting the period. Houzz is such a great resource!

Thanks! I have worked in quite a few older homes. It looks like the window goes below the counter... If you have a chance to post some measurements of the space that would be really helpful.

Will get measurements -- and yes, the windows go below the counters. We are replacing all 30 windows and think we will make one large window where the sink now is and close up the 2 that are there now. And we want to put a window on the wall that will open up to backyard. We also plan to take out the wall between the kitchen and dining room and make that an open space with counter/bar. Kitchen is large enough for a center island with a prep sink and seating. The house is of course on pier and beam so redoing plumbing is easy.

This old house also has a well inside the dog trot entry. Was once on a back porch which was enclosed in the early 1900's. My husband remembers his great grandmother keeping her Cokes cold inside a bucket in the well.

Be careful when replacing two smaller windows with one larger. If you have all rectangular windows and then replace one with a square or a horizontal rectangle, it will stick out from a long distance.

What a great house! Redoing the kitchen so that all the modern conveniences atre there but the old world charm remains should be a great project. The window replacement should be fine. Even if there are windows lining up above the ones you are removing, it is the back of the house and a good view of the yard is really nice in the kitchen.
