My understanding is that most freestanding ranges have the controls on the back (where the backsplash is), and all slide-in ranges have the controls on the front since there is no backsplash. At this point, there are only a hand-full of induction ranges out there (free standing or slide-in) so there's not much selection to choose from (as you've probably seen). Between the models, I like the GE Profile induction unit, even though it does have the backsplash with controls.

AFAIK, freestanding ranges have the backsplash. I've seen some models (KA) that have the controls on the front, but I've not seen an induction unit set up like this.

As for the slide-ins, you can have the edge of the oven door flush with the cabinet doors if you're careful with measurements, but you may have to knotch out the counter top a bit.

Besides the KA which has a small backsplash, the only other freestanding range without a backsplash (it's optional) is the GE Cafe, but that is not available in induction.

We have the Samsung freestanding induction, obviously has the backsplash, but that's just for the oven controls.

Thanks everyone! Looks like I'll be getting either the Kenmore or Electrolux. I just need to decide on which one! Too many decisions...
