Master Bath-- pics

We are building a new home and picking everything has been fun but overwhelming. I feel we have nailed the kitchen and kids baths... but i'm still wondering about the masterbath? We are building a traditional style home and i'm always thinking about resale... so i tried to go more neutral, figuring i can do up the paint and accesories.... So what do you think??? Lots of pics to help-- The tile is Porcelyn- and it is textured..a smooth texture. There is variation in color.. Top is silestone- sienna ridge, the wood cabinet is a redish brown.. Planning on painting it a warm cappachino color... I would love your thoughts- thumbs up or down? I have looked at too many samples and my head is swarming!! We signed the contract for this but i'm second guessing myself... will the shower look busy or good??

This is a picture of the room layout (our friends built the same house) so this is just to give you an idea of the room and space

The color of the tile is best seen in this picture- some of the other pics make it look lighter than it is...

INSPIRATION PIC for shower-- this is the concept i wanted in the shower-- its a picture frame with listello as a border but ours will be bigger (ours will be 40 x 40)

{{gwi:1448185}}

This is our tile (looks lighter in this pic) and thats the listello-- the listello will form a 40x40 picture from with 6x6 tiles on a diagonal in the middle of the picture frame... larger tiles will be outside the picture frame. The listello will also run in 1 straight line behind the tub (like the 1st picture)

I think that the shower would look fabulous! And your materials are very pretty too. Certainly thumbs up!!

    more feedback?

I really like your choices -- but maybe because they're very similar to what we've chosen! Except that we're going with a stronger burnt orange wall color, and have a marble & glass mosaic rather than a listello. (btw, I think your listello is lovely) Your materials seem to be "safe" enough for resale. I think we all second guess ourselves when the orders are being placed....it's too much $$ & stress not to second guess. I say you should go with it.

Here's a pic of our materials (altho we're changing the quartz countertop to something plainer so it won't be so busy against the mosaic). You can't tell very well from the pic, but the white tile has a graining similar to marble.

Hudson- i really like your tile choice... seems safer than mine (b/c its not raised/textured).... very very nice! If i had to offer- i would consider another paint--i'm worried the orange will take away from your LOVELY choices!

I'm not considering a even deeper cappachino color... but you should look at BM Peanut Shell... good luck!

You mentioned resale - if you put in fancy tilework into the shower area, some people will say, "Oh, I love it!" and others will be, "I can't wait to tear that out!" I'm not a fan of the tile work in the inspiration photo, but I am a minimalist. Instead of a lot of decoration in the shower stall, I would prefer a simple border like the one in your first photo, then just continue that border up and over into the shower. I think the listello you chose is absolutely beautiful - very classy and pretty - and would make a lovely border. And your colors are neutral enough that maybe even someone like me would like the picture frame design in the tiles - the inspiration pic has too much color variation and is too brown for my tastes.

So there you go - a differing opinion, just like you wanted! :) But of course the bottom line is, if you love it, go for it! Think what YOU would like to see when you walk into your bathroom. If the picture frame design appeals to you, and you will smile and get a little lift every time you see it, then you absolutely must do that!

Isn't that what makes design interesting, after all - that it is a reflection of our uniqueness and what we find appealing and what interests us?

I'd be interested to hear what you decided!

Hudson, could you tell me about your glass tile, manufacturer, color and where it is from.

    Thanks

    Suzi,

I think that will look great. Not busy at all.

Thank you for giving your feedback- i really do appreciate your time!

Paper- funny when i saw that picture frame border in a house once - i absolutly fell in love with it - so i took a picture and swore i would do that at some point of my life. My mother said the same thing you said (just do the border going through the shower- minimal...

I always do something different than the norm... lol

    i'll keep you posted..

meanwhile anyone else who has thoughts, please share!
    thanks

Suzie..thanks for the compliment. We stayed in a vacation house a couple of years ago that had a raised texture tile like yours (liked it so much, I took a picture of it!). I always thought I would use something like that, but when it came down to it it seemed a little too rustic in this bathroom. As for the color, well, we're bold people, and this is my daughters' (14, 12, & 8) bathroom, so I let them have a lot of input. Orange was what they chose, and I take a "well, it's only paint" position on it. BM Peanut Shell is something I'd put in my own bathroom or bedroom -- rich and soothing. Wait til you see the chandelier the girls are designing/making for their bathroom!

Also, I don't care at all about resale value. We bought this house so we can stay in it til the bitter end. By the time they drag me out of here feet first all my design choices will be waaaaay old-fashioned anyway.

Cubby -- my mosaic is a mix of glass, marble & reddish brown travertine. It's called Alloy Series Golden Gate (altho I've also seen it called Fusion Nevada Desert -- but the tile place told me they changed the name to Alloy). I ordered it online from GlassTileStore. It was $14.50/sqft. I have to say it's lovely in real life.

Hudson- what tile is that (what manufactorer?) Is it porcelyn?

I think all of your choices are very pretty, they really go together well, too. If you're thinking about resale though you might want to stay away from patterned tile (the leaf design). That is something that can be really personal. I would maybe pick something about the same color, but solid.

I'm not sure about the picture frame in the shower. I think yours is going to be a lot more subtle than in the inspiration photo, since the tile colors are much more similar. I'd say either picture frame or just border would be fine.

Congratulations. Looks like it's going to be a beautiful home. : )

Suzie - the white tile for the tub surround is a matte porcelain, but it doesn't have that really crisp (I think it's called rectified?) edge. It's Johnson Tiles City Collection, White Beige Marblestone, $6.50/sqft. Looks just like honed marble in real life, with very subtle grayish-brownish veining. The other, darker tile is for the floor, and it's Daltile Ridgeview Beige Ceramic, $1.80/sqft.
