I hang a lighted garland in the wide doorway between my living room and dining room. I use cup hooks, but my house is old and the woodwork has been painted and repainted many times. I'm not sure what I'd do if I was trying to preserve new or unpainted woodwork. Maybe you could put your hooks on the top of the woodwork where the holes wouldn't show.- Gail

Rope lights get warmer than the twinkle lights, so not sure if they would mar a wall.

They sell those hooks that you can peel off afterwards & they leave no marks, but yes, they aren't that cheap.

I have finishing nails tacked into the top of my molding around all my windows, doors and archways - you don't see them when they are not in use unless you know they are there and actually look for them .....

joytwo, I agree, hooks or small nails on the top of the woodwork. If you want your lights to hang lower than the hooks or nails allow then you could use pretty ribbon wrapped around the hooks letting it hang down to wrap around the lights.

Thank you all - our house is just four years old so I understand what DH means but I can't wait for it to get old to decorate (especially since I'm not a sping chicken anymore, more like an old hen!) The small nails and then ribbon is good ideas - I guess I'll just wait until he goes somewhere.

An alternative to finishing nails would be to nail a few two-pronged staples on top of the molding and then thread wire thru the staples loop to attach light/gard/and etc and tighten.

I use the command hooks for that type stuff because I don't have moldings around my windows.
