Sconces or single multi light fixture?

We are begining the remodeling of our very small original master bathroom. The floor space is 5x5, with a 3' square shower stall. The toilet and pedestal sink are on the opposite wall as you enter the bath, with the shower to the right. A large window is to the left as you enter the bathroom. My question is what kind of lighting will be best for the mirror over the sink, one multi light fixture centered over the mirror, or a sconce on either side? Other than an overhead light in the shower, this will be the only lighting.

Thanks!!!

I would go with the multi light over the mirror. The sconce option will only give you two lights, one on each side, but with the multi, a 3 globe light will fit perfectly over the pedistal sink.

If you have enough room for sconces on the side, that's what I would go with. Assuming you also have an overhead fixture in the bath. The side light is great because it doesn't cast a shadow when you are applying make-up, shaving, etc. Here is a photo of mine.

Bruteses, your bath is gorgeous! Could you provide more details on the lights, mirrors, vanities, wainscoating, and floor tiles? The color combinations are amazing! Thank you in advance.

Lukkiirish, I was heading in the direction of an overhead since the only overhead light is in the shower.

But then, Brutuses, you posted pics of your amazing bathroom!! The sconces are just gorgeous! Would love the detail Goldielive wants!

Since this bath is part of a guest room, I'm thinking go for the drama of the scones.

Sconces offer a more flattering light and, imo, better lighting. In my 10x11 bathroom, pre-renovation, I only had 2 (100w each) sconces. No need for overhead lighting. The room was very well lit. The new bathroom doesn't have sconces at the vanity. The lighting is far inferior. I have more options and configurations (3 sets of lights, total 5 lights) but they're not as good as the two side sconces.

    Thanks for the compliments.

    Lighting - Thomasville Roxbury collection
Vanities - Home Depot - not sure they still have them
Toilet - need to check with DH for brand-purchased at HD or Lowe's
Flooring - no name flooring from a local tile store
Wainscoting - vinyl from Lowe's or Homedepot (have to check with DH)
Cap on wainscoting - Molding picked up from a molding warehouse locally. We liked it better upside down so DH inverted and put in a grove so it would fit. Very inexpensive.
Wall tile - Home Depot - this size discontinued
    Shower tile - Home Depot
Whirlpool - Home depot - need to check with DH on name

You'll notice everything in this bath is inexpensive. After seeing someone else's gorgeous bath on here whose contents were primarily purchased from Home Depot, I thought I'd go that route, since by the time we got to this bathroom we were broke anyway. I'm surprised actually that it came out as good as it did. LOL

Here is the shower. We intend on putting glass block on it. All tiles from HD. Most expensive thing in this bath was the custom shower pan. Floor not grouted yet in this photo. Used this tile in the 2" square for my kitchen backsplash. Hey, when you find a bargain, you stick with it. LOL

Here is my guest bath. Also a very inexpensive bath.

Tile - unglazed ceramic from Home Depot. Can only be purchased online. I believe it was $3.62 sq. ft. We put 3 coats of finish to repel stains and dirt. Very inexpensive tile

Vanity - Paid $450 for it from antique dealer. Sink Lowe's $99 Faucets - online - don't remember from whom

Toilet - not sure of the brand - purchased from Lowe's or HD

Tub has a surround in it. No need for tile.

Wainscoting - vinyl, same as other bath.

Sconces - discontinued. I bought the last 2 that existed!!

Crystal door knobs - Hardware store online. If you want the name it I'll have to look it up. Our computer crashed a while back and I lost a lot of my information.

One day I'll get my beautiful toile curtains I had made for this room, up, so the room will finally look complete.

Add my vote to the sconces. Since you only have the shower light to add ambient light, you are likely to have more significant downlight shadows with the over the mirror fixtures. Following Brutuses example, however, you could put matching medicine cabinets over both the toilet and and the sink and then use three sconces. You'd end up with a little more nonintrusive storage too.

I've never had the opportunity to compare the differences in lighting between the over head lighting & sconces. Learn something new everytime I participate in this forum!

I guess it depends on the type of sconces and the paint color..I have two sconces in my bath, and recessed lighting, and it's still not enough light in the mirror area. My color is somewhat dark, and the sconces, while large, are covered by a somewhat frosted glass. This might be something to keep in mind as you compare. Looking back, I wish that I had gotten the multi light fixture..

Bruteses, thanks for the info on the MBA--so soothing! And the guest bath is gorgeous also! Thank you for the pics, too.

You have all convinced me; I've ordered two beautiful sconces from Quoizel; can't wait for them to arrive.

Bruteses, I TOTALLY agree with sticking with a bargain. I have been trying to decide what to do for a mirror over the sink, and found one today in a consignment shop for only $36. Not exactly what I thought I would get, but at that price, I'm going to give it a try.

I have an antique dresser that I plan to convert into a vanity in another bathroom. Like yours, Brutuses, mine has drawers instead of doors, so good to see that it will work.

Child #3 moves into his own place this weekend; demo on the bathroom begins soon after!!!

    you are very welcome Goldie

sj, can't wait to see your lights installed. Great find at the consignment shop. I find so many great bargains at consignment shops and CL.

Sconces are backordered until the end of July. My CL Kohler Memoirs pedestal sink with faucets is residing in the dining room for now, but what a deal it was; 8" wide spread faucets attached, both for less than the price of the faucet.

If all goes according to plan (and how often does that actually happen!) i'll be posting pics by August.

Thanks for all the great advice!

SJ, Sorry to hear the sconces are backordered but the end of July will be here soon! I love the look of sconces and agree that they give the best lighting for grooming when placed on each side of a mirror. I'd like to find a way to fit sconces on each side instead of bar lights over the top of the mirror, but my medicine cabinets are recessed into each side wall at each end of the vanity. I'm wondering, "How far in from the side walls are you placing your sconces?"

Goldielive, I'll only have inches between the right side sconce and side wall. The center of the sink/mirror will be only 22.5 inches from the right wall. Everything I've read says to have at least 30" between sconces, so the sconce will need to be 15" from the center point. The sconces are 5" wide. If I am doing my math correctly, ( and that's not a given; I teach L.arts and social studies :))that leaves a 7.5" space for a 5" sconce. Tight, but doable.
