I would use the 3 rows, if you can still make the change. It is a large space and can handle the bulkier 'trim'.

I only wish I had used a darker onyx than what you see in this pic (we used 6 rows). I would definately use at least 3 for yours but don't worry if you can't make the change. It will still look stunning. Your tile looks similar to mine.

i just talked to the tile guy- he will let me know in a few days if we can do this change. The problem is every time we change somethng they charge us $250-$500... for that its not worth the few hundred i would pay to go to 3 rows. So i'm hoping he wont charge me the change fee... to be continued....

I really like the subtlety of your selection because it is textural: although darker would look nice too, I like the tone-on-tone quality of yours.

I think behind the tub 3 rows will look great, but in the shower i have the large picture frame with the chair rail and the onyx... will 3 rows make it look too busy?

Any other opinions. I def. want to do either 3 rows everywhere or 2 rows- i dont want to split it up.

Suzie, you didn't show us the chair rail.

Can you mock up the chair rail, 2 and 3 rows of onyx, and some tiles on the diagonal- so we can see the proportions? As long as the chair rail is wider than the onyx I think it would be fine.

And, as the bath trim and shower trim don't line up anywhere, I don't see a problem with having 3 rows on the bath, and 2 on the shower, if you want to keep 2 rows within your picture frame.

I just think that because you have a fair amount of variation in your onyx mosaic tiles, that 3 rows gives a better representation of the colour than two. Two may be lost.

Is your flooring the same tile (though in a larger size) as your shower tile? If it is, then for sure, you can handle 3 rows to offer some break in the colour.

I dont have the tile here to do that - thats why i tried to draw it. The Chair rail is wide and thick....

Quite often I prefer odd numbers over even, but raehelen (and maybe others) brought up the other consideration, that being you don't want the three rows of onyx to overwhelm the chair rail, making the chair rail minor to the onyx.

So it all depends on the proportions. You wrote that your chair rail was fairly large, so sure, 3 rows could work just fine.

Chair rail is 2x7-- that means 2 rows of onyx would be 2/3 thick as the chair rail and 3 rows would be exactly the same thickness of the chair rail

WOO HOO Contractor approved our change today from 2 rows to 3 rows!! so happy! Here is a picture of the onyx.... the chair rail is a differnt color than ours but the same size.... our chair rail is in the pic above.

I'm so glad you were able to get the three rows. I think it will look more consistent if you continue with that number in the shower, as well as around the tub. I love the color of that onyx. Good Luck!

Mongoct- we had past our official date to make changes.. we had signed contracts, so technically they could have charged a heafy fee to change this -- if they had done that we weren't going to make the change-- but they did not charge it-- so we are really excited. God knows we're spending enough $$- budget- what budget- lol-- we are so excited!!
