Help me understand warranties

This might be a really basic question, but I'm trying to understand the standard 1-year manufacturers warranty on appliances. I'm particularly interested in understanding the link between the retailer and the warranty.

I know that I register the serial number with the manufacturer, and then I'm "covered". But what if I bought it from someone on craigslist, or ebay, or a clearance (seconds) shop? If it hasn't been registered before, do I have 1 year from when I register it? Or one year from the manufacture date? And if it needs to be replaced, does that go through the retailer or the manufacturer? And am I up a creek if I bought through one of these "alternative" methods? What if it was a floor model, does that impact the life of the warranty at all, since it was "used"?

Thanks for any help!
