Transferring Word documents

I have Toshiba laptop with MS Word Perfect 10 2002 and want to transfer documents from it to a Mac computer with WordMac 2004 v ll.5.3.

I copied them and downloaded them to the Mac but can't get the documents to open on the Mac. They show up on Mac Word as a very pale listing and will not open.

What do I need to be able to access these files?

TIA for any help. Though not completely computer ignorant I am not proficient and need detailed advice.

If you do not have too many files you could save them as RTF (Rich Text Format) and move them over. RTF files are readable by just about all word processors. Try one first to be sure.
