GE Cafe range--does it need filler?

We're templating for our countertop, and I have a question about my GE Cafe range. (And please don't tell me how terrible it is! I already own it and choose to remain hopeful.)

The salesman at the appliance store tells me that the range requires a narrow (about 1") strip of counter between it and the wall. OR I can attach the optional stainless backguard. I absolutely do not want the backguard--part of the reason I purchased this stove is that it looks like a slide-in, but it won't if I put on that backguard.

Anyway, today when the templater came, he looked at the range and determined that it does NOT require a strip of counter at the back.

Can someone who has installed this range tell me if it fills a standard 25" deep space WITHOUT using the optional backguard? or does it require a strip of counter? I looked through the specs and there is absolutely no mention of this issue. Thanks in advance.

Hi mmme,
I had the GE Cafe AG range (but don't anymore). We installed it without the 4 inch backguard simply because the backguard was backordered at the time. It looked fine and was made to fit perfectly between standard cabinets/counters (25 inches) without any type of filler strip--it is indeed a free-standing range. The backguard would have been nice just to keep food from falling behind the stove or splashing the wall (we also had not yet installed our tile backsplash at the time), but it is absolutely not necessary. The quick specs guide says:

You must use the rear filler strip kit shipped with
the range or the optional accessory backguard
when installing these ranges

Thank you for clarifying this for me. There are a couple of different versions of the specs available online, and one clearly shows a countertop cutout. It's confusing!

Hi mmme,
I just want to clarify....the 25 inches I referred to is indeed the counter depth (24 inch cabinet depth)...not the width of the space for the range which is 30 inches. I forget the actual depth of the range but it will be more than 25 inches. The oven door and handle will be mostly in front of depth of the cabinets.....so again, no filler strip behind is needed or even recommended unless they have drastically changed something since March which I sincerely doubt.

Then why does the specs page say you must install something behind it?

The strip has vent holes in it. Perhaps it is required to allow hot air from the rear of the oven to vent out the top. I currently have a granite spacer but the retailer "guessed" that it may be a vent.

All conventional ovens (wall ovens and ranges) have the baking cavity vented to release moisture generated during the cooking process.

Has anyone done a cafe in an island? im looking for a solution to try to make rhe vent cover flat.
