Help with Appliance Allowance

I have been reading post upon post over the past month and decided I should simply ask for some help. So here I am a new member asking for help!

We have a small budget for our appliances. Can you please help me make some wise choices? We are a family of six and I cook; we do not eat out more than once a week. What can we make work with a budget of only $8000? We need every appliance for the kitchen...refrigerator and freezer, dishwasher, microwave, vent and something in which to cook and bake, and in a perfect world, a warming drawer!

Things I do know! I prefer to cook with gas and I do not want a microwave/vent combo as they do not seem to work well.

We live on the border of Mexico and our nearest large town is 3.5 hours away; we do not have the ability to get our hands on anything except what Home Depot offers.

Feel free to ask as many questions as needed. Please, let me know how you would spend your money!!!

Thanks so much you'll.

It's very doable - I would focus on the range and get a really good one. This would be my breakdown:

    range 4K
    hood 1K
    fridge 2K
    DW 1K
    MW $200

clearly you can get a less expensive range, fridge and/or DW - but that budget will do you really well - that's approximately what I did

    range 4K
    hood 1K
    fridge 2K
    DW 1K
    MW $200

Ditto on Weissman's suggestion. With the internet you can shop like a New Yorker or Angelino. You can buy items beyond those offered at the Depot or Lowes.

    Range Capital Culinarian
    Hood Kobe
    Fridge Samsung
    DW Discontinued Miele or KitchenAid.
    MW Sharp

oh yeah. i had a $10k budget and came in at under $7k
range: 30" bluestar rnb - you could buy a great 36" (which i would for a family of 6) and not go so dear..easily get a great range for 2-3k
    hood: kobe
fridge: whirlpool gold (it was the one to fit the space)
    dw: bosch.

start on ajmadison site. even if they don't sell to your area, you'll find a store to match prices. go in armed with reputable quotes. find a 'scratch and dent' store or outlet and save even more.
i didn't negotiate each item. i called three stores - all with internet presence and gave them all 4 items (we didn't need a micro) and said: just give me your lowest price on the package - with tax and shipping (of course, most didn't charge for the shipping).

    good luck!

weissman: Thank you for the breakdown of cost; I feel much more relaxed about this process.

deeageaux: Yes, I have relied on the internet for years with shopping; however, I have never purchased anything this expensive online! The most expensive purchase I have ever made online was a desk..LOL. I have been eye balling Samsung fridge, Sharp micro, and Miele dishwasher but man, there are such mixed reviews. We lived in Germany for some years and I adored the dw, all stainless inside, air dried and the ability for salt to soften the water. It was awesome!

ebean: It would be fantastic to come in at 7K!!! I have been debating about the 36" range because my cooking needs are only going to grow. Did you get a second oven or do you think there is really a need? Would a convection mw work? Or maybe a better solution, a warming drawer?

Thanks for all of your input.

    mommaseed,

I recently purchased a Bosch Washer,Weber BBQ,and Gaggenau oven and had them shipped across the country. Saved thousands and had no problems. Knock on wood.

Make sure the dealer is reputable and items are insured.

Buy with either a good credit card company that will back you if anything goes wrong or paypal on Ebay.

You can always ask for help with each individual item or dealer you are considering too.

mammaseed: we are only a family of three so no need for a second oven. in fact, the bluestar oven on the 30" will be over-double the size of my little 1955 side oven that is on it's way out.
make a list on a piece of paper. put 3 companies on it and under list what each asks for each appliance. then call the 3 companies...get a decent salesperson on the phone and ask for a package price. tell them upfront you're looking for the best deal and since you're buying a number of appliances from them, want their bottom line. if they make a promise re free shipping, etc., make them write it into the invoice.
