Well, I have been using a Miele canister vacuum for about 20 years, so I highly recommend the Miele products. I don't know what the price is for their uprights, but you really need to consider the quality of the unit for it's real value. Based on my own personal experience with Miele I would buy another in a heartbeat - if my current model ever stops working that is.

If you are willing to spend $550 over the net or $700 plus tax at your local dealer the Miele S7 is great.

That is not my idea of mid-priced. For about $400 the standard Dyson is really pushing the limits of mid-priced.

For a "popularly priced" vacuum I like the Hoover Uh60010 Self Propelled Windtunnel. It is bagless. Under $200 delivered.

I love my Dyson...it will suck chrome off a trailer hitch, as my husband says.....

    Dyson, for sure.

Had a Dyson. Gave it away. Got a Miele. You ain't gittin it from me without a tussle. And a crowbar.

I would look at Simplicity. Assembled in the USA.

I have both a dyson upright and a miele canister. I bought the miele after the dyson as I don't like emptying the dyson. the dyson now resides in the garage. I also have a built in vacUflo. I like the built in for getting dust off the hardwoods but the miele hands down for the carpets. The miele is quiet and easy to pull around. The only thing I don't like is the cord is rather short in comparison to some other brands. If I was starting over with just our built in, I might consider an Oreck as it is so light weight that it is easy to carry from place to place. I can't comment on a miele upright. People either love or hate their Dysons - as for me, hate is a strong word, but..

Another happy Miele cannister user for 11 years. I have 2 versions, for different levels of my house. The Miele Red Star (don't think it's made anymore, as I purchased it in 1999), and the Miele Capricorn, purchased in 2006.

Good Housekeeping Institute just rated the Miele upright as THE best upright on the market...at any price.

I agree that Miele costs quite a bit initially, but when you factor in quality of cleaning, ease of use, and years & years of reliable performance, it really does make it a very affordable vacuum cleaner. It is definitely a "keep & repair; keep & maintain" vacuum cleaner...not a disposable brand.

Canadian Costcos sell the Miele S7 for around $500 if I recall correctly. I have a Miele canister which I am never giving up. I used my parent's Dyson canister and found it too cumbersome to move around.

Sorry meant to say Dyson upright.

I have a Hoover Windtunnel Self-propelled (bagged) upright that has the best suction for carpet cleaning I have ever used. The 3 Dysons I have used don't have near the suction of the Hoover. It may "never lose suction," but it doesn't have as much to begin with. And I was surprised how difficult it was to use the Dyson attachments. The Hoover has a large bag capacity that fills efficiently without clogging and without reducing suction until it is quite full. Bags are cheap and easy to find.

I also have a Miele canister which I like for hard floors and area rugs. Nice filtration, nice retractable cord that works. The Turbobrush doesn't have the powerful suction (and motorized spinning) of the Hoover for cleaning wall-to-wall carpet, but it's OK. Of course, Mieles are never medium priced. I will probably use only the Miele once we make the switch to hard floors with area rugs. I do not like using the Hoover on hard floors.

I've used many vacuums (friends', family's, cleaning company I once worked for), and the Hoover is the best at cleaning carpet. I consider it medium-priced at around $220, and Costco usually carries it.

My wife was a Kirby vacuum user when I met her and I haven't been able to convince her hat it is not really worth the money. I always have liked the top of the line Hoover vacuums that use disposable bags. I can't figure out why anyone would consider shaking a dirty vacuum canister and spreading dust and dust mites all over the place.

I have a Miele Platinum that I bought 12 years ago and it works as well as the day I bought it. I love the way it works, it's easy to pull around and I love it. I would replace it in a heardbeat, but it doesn't show any signs of dying. It was worth every penny we spent on it.

I found this old Hoover on ebay, NIB (new in the box), for 30 dollars delivered. It had that old mid-century modern look to it. I felt like I was back on "Leave it to Beaver". It works great but my wife likes the Panasonic because it is more quiet and she does not appreciate my appreciation for that old American made tank on wheels.

I have a Miele canister that I bought about 7 years ago. Easily the best vacuum cleaner I've ever had. I don't remember the exact model but it is some sort of S5 picked for the particular floor surfaces in my house (mostly hardwood, tile in baths and kitchen, a couple of orientals) and it is excellent. My hardwood floors look better than when we bought to the house due to regular use with the HW floor tool. Easy to use, maneuverable, heads are very good, motor is very good, very decent sound volume that doesn't assault the eardrums.
    I highly recommend it.

I've had an Oreck-XL for over 25 years & remain happy. My requirement was that it be light & it has met that requirement. I am not someone who vacuums a lot, but have replaced several belts over the years. I have been thinking about replacing since I think they do make them a little quieter these days & know that Costco seems to be selling them for around $450 (not sure which model, but includes a hand-held appliance also); however, I was in the store buying bags recently & was pleasantly surprised that I could replace this one for about $250. I will do some additional research to make sure I purchase one that is good for wood floors & carpet & is quiet (but not willing to pay $700 for quiet). Good luck with your decision!

Sebo makes fantastic uprights...about 500 dollars. They really go down flat for getting under beds etc. They're completely sealed and don't aggravate allergies.

I have the C3.1 canister because I didn't want to haul an upright up and down all the little stairs in my house, but the uprights are great.

Have a Dyson 14 -- love it, it has incredible suction.

I personally hate canister vacs -- what a pain to use.

I just got a Hoover Platinum bagged upright with a separate lightweight canister vaccuum and I'm very happy with both of them. The upright is great on my carpet and hard floors and the canister is great for corners, baseboards, windowsills, ceilings, etc. You can carry it over your shoulder, like a crossover purse -not heavy at all.

I have a dog and 2 cats ... nothing beats the Dyson for me. It gets up hair in one pass when I used to have to go over the same spot over and over with my former high priced Hoover.
