Does the moulding in the entire house need to match or can the upstairs and downstairs be different?

I spec moldings based on the room type and ceiling height. That is, moldings should/can be more elaborate when the room calls for it, and simplified when it does not. Also, proportion trumps continuity in my opinion. Most of us have seen moldings (crown/base/casing) that look either too small or too large for a room, so using the same throughout doesnt always work when you have spaces with different ceiling heights and proportions, etc.

However, even with this variety, its usually quite easy to create a visual consistency from room to room

I look for continuity throughout, moulding included :) It just says the job was completed not 1/2 done

Traditionally service areas--back hall, bedrooms, etc.. were done in a somewhat simplier manner than the "show" areas. I would say it depends, but don't skimp too much--you want it to look finished, not like you ran out of money. You might be able to keep them the same thickness but with a simplier profile. And it could be something to save for later if you have to.

Personally, I like the moldings to be the same throughout for continuity.

I do partially agree with the other commenters, but the new house that I purchased has both dentil, triple crown, and crown molding throughout, and I think that if done right, creates a layered, more interesting look! Just my opinion.

We were actually considering advice on baseboards as well window trim. We were thinking a little less formal upstairs.

Oh, ok, well for baseboards I like them to be all the same. For crown, I don't really know as I only have crown in my living room!

I think continuity of all baseboards is nice. Also a thicker baseboard in my opinion such as a 4 1/2" and taller. As for crown I think it depends on the room and your personal style. More traditional will have more details and vary. More clean-line and contemporary or not as ornate go with similar to exact same throughout...

I agree with Steve. The size and intricacy can certainly change with the formality of the space as you go from room to room. As a for instance, the powder bath would take a smaller trim than a formal entry. I often vary moldings from room to room unless there is a continual floor or a continual wall color.
