Another thing to check with the Thermador is that you are pushing the ice bucket all the way back. That means not just closed but until you feel or hear it click and trip the sensor. It will not drop ice cubes if the sensor is telling it that the bucket is not in place.

Thanks for the advice. I called for a service appt. However, after a few days, I noticed that the ice production had picked up. I checked it yesterday, and it is working appropriately. So I cancelled the service visit. Thanks again.

FWIW, we are waiting for our third service call for our Therm ice maker. Stopped making ice. They came out the first time, found that the magnetic catch that holds the bucket in place was broken, replaced it, but no results. Second trip he replaced the entire ice maker, still no ice. Was supposed to come out yesterday for third try, but called to say that "actually, the ice maker I installed last time was the one on my truck, and it was the wrong one for your freezer, so I have ordered a new one." Hmmm--tell me again why you tried to install the wrong one last time???

At any rate, we're still waiting. I will say that of all our appliances, now at the one year mark, including the Miele DW's and oven, the Lacanche range, the Panasonic MW, that the only choice to date I've had some second thoughts about are the Therm columns. They are beautiful, work well, but I am increasingly nervous about longevity and service. Still, SZ, the obvious alternative, just didn't offer what we wanted (fully integrated, with larger fridge and smaller freezer vs the 27'' SZ units). We'll see.

we just installed ours on Friday. made about 50 cubes and then nothing. emptied it, made about 50 more and then stopped. just enough to line the bottom of the drawer. i'm thinking there's some sensor that is "thinking" the drawer is full?

mahlgold: we finally have our ice maker working again. It took four service calls. The first tech replaced the magnetic "catch" that pulls the bucket backwards to activate ice production. No dice. The second tech replaced the entire ice maker. Still no dice. He came back, admitted that he had just installed the wrong icemaker (he "had it on the truck") and had to order the correct model. When finally installed, it worked and we're back to ice production. I'd estimate a half bucket of ice per 24 hours.

I would check that there's nothing interfering with the ice bucket seating all the way back, as if it does not no ice is produced. There is a long plastic bar on the back of the bucket that contains a magnet: it sticks to a magnet on the back wall of the freezer to hold the bucket in place. Ours was broken, which was one of the two problems.

It certainly appears that the icemaker is a weak spot for the Therm columns. Good luck. Keep us informed on how it goes.

It initially took a long time for our ice maker to fill the bucket but now it's fine. However, I notice that the ice sticks together. This never happened in my SZ. Is this normal, or am I having a problem with temperature variation causing too much freeze/thaw? I don't open the freezer much. Any suggestions?

If you set your freezer on -4 this really helps with the Thermador columns. It increases ice production and also helps keep the cubes from freezing together after harvest

Ice makers are problems with just about all fridge/freezers.

I'm sure next year Consumer Reports will bury Thermador fridges in the reliability column and give them a "not rec" because they are obviously pieces of junk.

What size are the cubes supposed to be? I get a few okay size, but most are very small.

Wow, resurrected a thread from 14 years ago, which I participated in. Our Therm Freedom column freezer makes typical crescent sized cubes like almost any other ice maker. When it works. You can see upthread the problems I had initially. Well, since then we have replaced the ice maker two more times. Now the third unit is failing. I've given up and just haul ice up from the cheap freezer in the basement. This is technology that, at least for me, thermador has never gotten right.

Small cubes aren't normal. I presume it indicates that the maker is not filling the ice molds fully. I would check the water filter that feeds the ice maker. It's a huge source of problems, as they clog and then the ice maker stops working. I also find the filters incredibly difficult to replace. They are supposed to just twist in, but I have to use Vice Grips to turn them, worry constantly I am going to break something, and am never confident the filter is properly seated.

If that doesn't work, and the small cube issue persists, I suspect a service call is in order. And they will just tell you to replace the whole thing at a considerable cost.

I have a narrow column freezer and a wide one.
The narrow one makes larger crescent shaped cubes, and the wider freezer makes smaller square top cubes that taper on the bottom.

Agree that filter changes are a pain. Turn water off to filter if possible to depressurize before changing.

Thank you both for the responses to this very old thread. We recently purchased a home with all Thermador appliances The ice has been a problem. The filter alarm was sounding when we first moved in. When removing the filter, we saw the date was a couple years ago. First filter we installed resulted in no ice production. I returned that and bought the one specifically recommended. Ice resumed but has been very slow. About 3 smallish cubes per harvest. I have removed and reinstalled the filter a few times. The ice production seems to have picked up, but I don't know that it's as it should be. I did get 130ish cubes in a 24 hour time period. They are so small, that it's not enough for our usage habits. Here what I've gotten in a day.

That’s what my newest freezer makes.
I would let it fill. For some reason mine fills slower when empty and picks up when over half full.
Also check the off white plastic hook for the automatic shut off when the bin is full.
My kids have broken it more than once closing the drawer.

Incidentally, on that one I just put a filter bypass in the freezer and I have it plumbed directly to an RO filtration system.

I have a 36. It is above the drawer under the icemaker.

The 18 might be different.
If it doesn’t have one, they break off pretty easily. You might check your parts diagram or compare yours to a pic of a replacement ice maker online

Me again. Our icemaker worked fine for a year, then it slowly went downhill with less and less ice reaching the molds. We have a new service provider and this time they replaced the water valve and icemaker. Two days later, and the bin is maybe 1/4 filled without us using any. Of the 10 molds, only 6ish are getting water in them. To me this is not the way it's designed right? Shouldn't all 10 molds be filled with each cycle?
