Have you seen the Consumer Reports' review? One of the Toto dual flush toilets did not flush liquid waste with one flush (using two flushes obviously negates the point of the dual flush). I will see if I can get the ratings to post if you do not have access.

I had the regular Toto toilets in my last house. I have four young kids and those toilets have only needed to be plunged twice in 2 1/2 years.

As far as the toilet not flushing liquid with one flush, I would not base my decision on this. We have dual flush commercial toilets at the university I attend and on several occasions they didn't flush everything down with the water saving mode either. The toilet tissue would sometimes get stuck on the edge of the bowl. I guess this can happen with any toilet if it can happen with these commercial style toilets.

I don't bother with Consumer Reports any longer for reasons similar to my above experience. It's best to listen to real folks who actually own the products. That's just my opinion though.

I used only Caroma for most of my life until I moved to the US. They work extremely well and never clog. The one thing that may bother you, or that you may not be used to, is that the water level is lower than most of the toilets here. When I used the bathroom at the airport just after I landed here the first time, I thought that the water was going to rise up over the edge. It scared me half to death.

I've been going back and forth between Caroma and Toto myself, we need to chose a new toilet for our powder room over the next couple of weeks. You read mostly good things about both, so you're probably okay either way. I have a Toto now, a few years old and I'm not crazy about it, but it has never clogged. I'm leaning towards the Caroma.

But, I just heard about the Proficiency 3L single flush toilet. I've attached a link I came across this weekend while researching toilets, an independent test lab testing this new toilet. Impressive results. The dual flush toilets on the market have the 3L/6L options, this toilet just uses 3L for all flushes and seems to work better than most toilets on the market. I emailed the manufacturer asking where to buy them, I will phone a retail outlet and get a price tomorrow.

Is that for all Caroma's products? I am about to buy a wall hung Somerton Invisi, anything to worry about for that model?

This may be late but I wanted to add my opinion.

I have a caroma somerton (2017) and I will be purchasing either two more somertons (2 piece) for another renovation or the caravelle (1 piece).

The cons.

The low water level makes it needing to be cleaned more often. Not a huge issue for me because now that I have thought about it by the time I actually clean conventional water level toilets they are disgusting under the lips, so this just promotes me to clean it a little more often. After using the toilet you learn to position yourself a little more forward and put a square or two of toilet paper down to stop any splash back.

I don't know and wouldn't say it save water compared to any other toilet to actually flush what you need flushed down. I just hold the flush for a second or two more and there is never anything left to worry about. You could technically hold the flush until there is no more water in the tank but I have never needed to do that.

The pros.

This is a very easy toilet to clean. I admit I don't have a lot of experience cleaning various brands of toilets, but compared to the toilets I have cleaned, cleaning this guy doesn't wreck my afternoon. It doesn't have any hidden dips or holes under the toilet lip and where the water comes out, so just a few swipes with the toilet brush and a cleaning solution, then i rinse it with my hand shower and it is sparkling. The trapway cleans beautifully as well, you don't need to angle the brush to get down further. The skirted edge is great and clean looking, lots of other brands do this too but still it is a pro. After a cleaning this toilet looks brand new and it has been heavily used in our household, since 2017, because we have been doing work constant work on the other bathrooms since then.

Think of the most horrible disgusting thing you will do to this toilet and it will flush it down. I am so spoiled with how well this flushes that when I use other toilets I have to actively remember to not flush as much toilet paper. I love this pro so much that I found minor work arounds to the cons to make this toilet work for me.

I have had the caroma somerton for 6 years, no clogs, no leaks, no breaks, no needing to re-silicone, I have walked into it many times, everytime thinking I broke it and it is going to come loose, and it doesn't even budge (it screws into the floor rather than just securing to the drain). I think I will have it for a very long time. I am sure there are other toilets that are just as quality and great, but the caroma trapway flushing ability seals the deal for me. Unless a major design issue or quality issue happens I will be staying with caroma.

ps. I never thought I would feel so strongly about a toilet in my life... haha.

In no circumstances should you buy a Caroma toilet. Because of the way it is anchored, there is no way to replace the seat without removing the toilet so you can see where the anchors are. It will cost us several hundred dollars to get a new toilet purchased, delivered, and installed one just so we'll be able to change the seat in future. .

I'm trying to decide between Toto and Caroma... Leaning strongly towards Toto because I like the flush system. Also do not want a dual flush. Seems like more things to go wrong, and I don't like dirty hands pushing down on the buttons.

We've been happily using 4 caroma toilets in my house for the past 8 years. They've been fantastic! Yes you may have to touch up the bowl with a brush after a serious use, but that is nothing compared to the sinking feeling each time another toilet clogs. My family clogs toilets and Caroma is our answer!

By the way, I wonder what you mean by being unable to remove the seat without uninstalling the toilet? The backside of the bolts are right there under the toilet..kinda like every other toilet. Is this a special model?
