In! (It's true!)

Well...

Wing'ed pigs and parkas in hell aside, after 7 years of planning, permits, clearing, sweating, swearing and building, I am finally moved in!

Sort of...

I've got just enough clothes to wear, there are a enough dishes in the kitchen to bodge together a meal and enough towels and toilet paper to be hygienic and a nice new fluffy bed to sleep in.

What I don't have is hardly any furniture, artwork, rugs, television or internet but I DON'T CARE!

It feels so good/strange/wonderful to be finally living in the house that has totally consumed my life for the last several decades (ok, not decades, but it feels that way sometimes...) It feels like I'm in some wonderful hotel - that is, until I am reminded that there will be no room service and that the maid is that woman I see in the mirror. LOL

For those of you who think itll never end, take heart. That light at the end of the tunnel is real - you will get there eventually.

Posting will be sporadic till the internet access gets sorted out. No cable out in the boonies and I shudder at the speed of dial-up. IÂll be able to log in occasionally at the old house as I continue the arduous task of moving a lifetimeÂs accumulations worth of household goods from Point A to Point B.

Thanks to all the great advice and hand holding. I donÂt know what I would have done without this forum.

Now for decorating, landscaping, cleaning, maintenance...

*grin*

Lorraineal, congratulations!!! Oh, that must feel so great. I'm so happy for you, and I remember when you got your concrete? I think that was it, and I've seen various shots that you've posted throughout the year plus that I've been here. It's a beautiful home and a beautiful view. I am truly happy for you and wish you many years of bliss in your hotel-without-maidservice. I hope to join you in the ranks of the "moved in" in the next 3 weeks. *rubs hands together in anticipation*

Major Congrats!!! It's so cool to be "in" even when it's not *quite* as homey comfy as you want. That will come with time. ENJOY, and I do hope you post pics as I'd love to see (I'm fairly new here so I haven't seen progress pics)

CONGRATS!! Had no idea it has taken you so long. Is the hilltop view as spectacular as it seems from our view of it (in your posted photos)? Can't even imagine it.

And thank you for encouraging the rest of us. We're still trying to get our plan finalized. (Will these people EVER just draw it the way we want it???) So, today, as I correct yet another professional's rendition of my plan, I will remember that perhaps before I die I will be in an actual dwelling.

And may I ask now: Is your answer to my recent question ("Would you ever build again?") still the same as before?

Would you ever build again--under any circumstances?

Certainly! I havent started living in the new house yet but I can already see the handwriting on the wall - the house weve built is far too large for one or two persons. Its a loong walk from one end of the house to the other and 16 acres is going to require lots and lots of upkeep.

Plus, underneath all the pain, delays, cost over-runs, sleepless nights and gut-grinding angst, I believe I have truly have enjoyed the process. There is nothing like seeing your dreams and drawings come to fruition in glorious concrete 3-D.

How fantastic! I know how you feel about not having all your stuff around you but oh so happy to be "in." My livingroom is completely empty but I'm trying to be patient and methodic about filling the house with "stuff."

    Congratulations!

Woohoo!! Congratulations! September has sure turned into a lucky month for a bunch of us, hasn't it. :)

I understand the internet/tv -- I was in for ten days before all that got straightened out.

    Have fun unpacking!

Thanks to all for your kind words and congratulations. Every day it just keeps getting better and better.

Photos - eventually - I promise! (Note to self: Gotta set up a Photobucket account and get some pics uploaded here pretty soon)

The view is spectacular - the other night I glanced out the window and saw a bright, bright glow to the west. It was too big to be city lights on the clouds and too early to be the moon setting. When I stepped outside I realized it was actually the reflected glow of the full moon on the ocean some 30 miles away. Oh wow

We broke ground three-and-a-half years ago on an ICF house in an area where ICF houses are still a novelty. I wish I had a nickel for every time a sub said - "Ive never seen/done/heard of it done like that before." We endured record rains, record heat, cost-overruns, head scratching stupidity, inept subs/ordering/suppliers, the worst door order ever shipped from TM Cobb, clueless inspectors, crazy subs and delay after delay after delay. On the other hand, we eventually assembled a crew of conscientious craftsmen who really took pride in a job well done. Our baseboard is a work of art. The interior walls are finished and painted to perfection. The walls are straight and the roof is tight. This house will be standing long after the memory of me is gone. Its a nice feeling.

lindybarts ~ Theres still a few of the scaly devils around although not near as many as in years past. Had a little one stretched out warming his belly on the concrete under the van just last week. I dont think the rattlesnakes will ever disappear entirely.

pinktoes ~ Oh yes Id consider building again. Im still lovin seeing the fruits of our labors.

Did have one adventurous moment the other night, though

The new alarm system to can be set up 'chime' when a door or window is opened - a nice feature when the other end of the house is in a different zip code. *grin*

After dutifully setting the alarm and turning in for a cozy night, I found myself awakened at oh-God-thirty by a cheery 'bing!-bong!'.

From a dead sleep, my hind-brain launched me of bed and onto my feet in like .04 seconds. I briefly considered hiding under the bed then bucked up and starting wandering from room to room looking for shadows. It was dark, I couldn't see, hear or even smell anything. I crept around till I felt a draught coming from the front entryway. Standing behind the corner in my jammies, I wasn't sure what I planned to do if I did find an intruder, but I knew I couldn't stand there all night wondering if someone else was standing on the other side of the corner...
    ...
    ...
    waiting...
    ...
    ...
    listening... ... ...
    ...
    ...
    peering around the corner... ... ... ... ...
    ...
    ...
    what the!...oh, dang-nab it...!

Seems the early morning Santa Ana wind had blown the almost-but-apparently-not-quite-fully-latched-because-it-still-had-the-damn-cheap-contractor's-access-lock-on-it front door wide open.

Nothing like a little adrenaline to kick-start your morning, eh?

The permanent secure lock went on that same day.

OH....lorraineal, I can't tell you how happy I am that your home!

Over the "years" I've enjoyed seeing your pics. And, you've built such a truly stunning home that is just picture perfect for your picture perfect area. Remember for us all to read that "Note to self..." on getting a photobucket account set up ok?

Oh, and I'm LMAO at your night time "intruder". We had that same windy person visit us last week in our upstairs gameroom....the same one the g-kids were playing around that afternoon.

Congratulations. You give me hope I'll be in my new house one day also. You said 7 years, and we're only going on 4. I feel blessed!! I told my DH I'll be living in that house next year if it means living on plywood floors!!
