I'm having trouble decorating this room. It's a long rectangle. We don't want the sofa in front of the fireplace. I'm not going to buy anymore furniture until I have a plan. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

I GREW UP IN A BOSTON SUBURB AND YOUR HOME LOOKS LIKE MY PARENTS' AND MY OWN HOME BEFORE WE RETIRED TO CAPE COD. THE ROOM IS A DIFFICULT SHAPE, SO HERE GOES WITH A COUPLE OF IDEAS. LOVE YOUR RUG. PERFECT. I LIKE THE WAY THE SOFA LOOKS ON IT AND THE PLACEMENT OF YOUR SOFA. I'D LEAVE IT WHERE IT IS, OTHERWISE YOU WILL BE CUTTING THE PATTERN IF IT FACES THE FIREPLACE. YOUR FURNITURE HUGS THE WALLS. MOVE THE TWO CHAIRS TO EITHER SIDE OF THE COFFEE TABLE AND PLACE THE PIANO OPPOSITE THE SOFA AND TWO CHAIRS. NOW FOR NEW THINGS. NOT CRAZY ABOUT THE COFFEE TABLE. TOO MATCHY, MATCHY. A LOVELY GLASS AND BRUSHED BRASS WOULD BE NICE. OVER THE PIANO, A LOVELY DARK OIL PAINTING AND A PIANO LAMP. TWO UPHOLSTERED ACCENT CHAIRS ON EITHER SIDE OF THE FIREPLACE AND AN IRON FIREPLACE BENCH. I HAVE ONE..THE FIRST THING MY HUSBAND AND I BOUGHT AT AN ESTATE SALE AND I HAVE USED IT IN EVERY HOUSE. UPHOLSTERED IN A BEAUTIFUL FABRIC, IT CAN SEAT TWO OR THREE WHEN YOU HAVE AN OVERFLOW OF GUESTS. TAKE A LOOK AT TWO'S COMPANY GOLD SUNFLOWER MIRROR TO REPLACE THE ONE YOU HAVE NOW. NOW FOR THE WALLS. A CHAIR RAIL WOULD BE INTERESTING AND YOU COULD LEAVE YOUR PAINT COLOR BELOW. OVER THE CHAIR RAIL, HANG A LOVELY GRASSCLOTH IN LIGHTER OR DARKER TONES OF YOUR SOFA/WINDOW PANELS. YOUR MANTEL AND SURROUND WILL STAND OUT. I LIKE YOUR ROOM A LOT. HOPE SOME SUGGESTIONS HELP.

Hi Judy! Definitely these suggestions help. I just moved into this house last spring, and this room is really challenging. I do plan to get rid of the coffee table and side tables; in fact, they're borrowed just to have something there for now. I like the idea of a bench in front of the fireplace. The two chairs I have now are not heavy enough for each side of the coffee table on their own...hard to explain. But I was considering buying two slightly more substantial upholstered chairs in a gold or sage to match the sofa, which is a chenille sage and gold pattern. Maybe the two chairs that are there now can move somewhere by the fireplace. They are my prized brunschwig and fils chairs, but didnt work as beautifully in the room as I had envisioned when I bought them. We were thinking of a brass coffee table too. I like the piano suggestions too. Thanks for taking the time to give me your advice. I go to estate sales all the time...and I will keep in your mind your suggestions during the treasure hunt. Thanks!
