3 Defective GE Cafe Ranges in a row! Anyone else having problems?

Hi there, I have been lurking here for a while getting info and opinions while I decided on a new gas range and dishwasher. I appreciate how informative everyone on this forum has been. With that said, I would like to know if anyone else who has bought a GE CafRange has had any problems such as mine and possibly warn anyone interested in one of potential problems.

I purchased my range from Sears in October. My first one was delivered and much to my dismay, it was defective. The oven door was totally misaligned. It was so off, that the left side completely missed the rubber bumper when the door was closed. It came to rest on the inside edge of the bumper. The right side of the door over shot the oven on that side and the whole door was visibly unlevel. The bottom oven door was crooked and stuck out further on the left side than the right and wouldnÂt close as far on that side. Also, there were grinder marks in the stainless on the sides at the top. I know nothing is perfect anymore and I am not being overly picky here. Everyone who has seen it cannot believe how bad it is.

I called my salesperson and she told me to call Home Delivery and have another one ordered, which I did and I told them to check it before delivering. I received a call from them 2 days before delivery. The new one had the same exact defects as the the first one so they werenÂt even going to deliver it. At this point I was very leery of the range all together and actually emailed GE with my concerns. They ended up calling me and assuring me that there was not a problem with the manufacturing and that it just had to be a fluke that I had received two with the same defects. I should go ahead and try again. So I said a prayer and waited hopefully for the delivery.

They delivered it last night and guess whatÂthe exact same defects. The delivery man said he had the same thing happen with someone else and suggested I try a different range all together. He said if I ordered another GE Café, it would be the same.

I called GE Consumer Relations and while the lady was extremely nice, she basically said there was no problems with the manufacturing of the range that they knew of. I am supposedly the only complaint they have had and I would have to take it up with Sears. Then she kind of relented and told me what I really needed to do was write to the CEO and she gave me his name and address. I think I will. It really upsets me that GE hypes this range , charges $2500 for it, then apparently lets them leave the factory without a proper inspection to be sold to unsuspecting consumers.

There is no way that I am the only person this has happened to. That would just be too big of a coincidence. I really loved this range because of the center burner. If I knew for sure there are decent ones out there and I could get one, I would keep trying. I live in Ohio and I am wondering if the distribution center in Columbus just got a "bad batch."

Any other GE Café Range owners out there? Anyone have similar problems?

Thanks and sorry for the long post.

I just installed mine the other day and there are no defects that I can see on the doors or the burners. It fired up real nice. But, I have had it for one day, so we'll see.

I don't know if this is a help, but the center burner attracted me too, and I seriously considered the Cafe. But I didn't really want an entire stainless steel appliance to shine out as you enter the kitchen. I didn't want black or white either. So I decided to check out some stovetops. Yesterday at Sears I saw a great looking one, with 5 burners. The 4th and 5th burners are composed of the biggest bridge burner I've seen so far. And as a 36" unit, there's more cooking space than the Cafe has.

Here's a link. It looks more impressive in person -- it really impressed me. Kenmore Pro cooktop #31013

The problem is probably bad handling in the warehouse from clamping units and stacking them

    Our Cafe' (from Abt) works like a charm, no defects. It is all that we had hoped for and more. I agree with Jakvis;
Sears delivery may well be the source of the problem.

Mine "looks" fine, but I think there is a problem with the burners. The flame on the center burner and the front right burner are very small. On the power boil setting, the front right has an impressive big flame, but on anything from "HI" down there is a barely visible blue flame.

I compared the front right to the back left and the smaller back left burner produces a much bigger flame and far more heat..

Anyone else notice this with their cafe?

All my burners appear ok with the exception of the left rear burner. It lights up ok but if I immediately turn the knob to LO the flame goes out. The flame does not re-ignite when leaving it set on LO.

When I turn the knob back to number 2 a flame is seen and then it goes to a simmering flame after turning knob back to LO.

When testing with the left front burner the flame re-ignites itself on the LO setting.

For all other burners the flame goes to a low flame without actually going out when knob is turned to LO.

I called GE Service (800 number from www.geappliances.com) this morning and since it's still under the 1 year warranty theyve scheduled someone to come out Friday afternoon. They had wanted to send someone on Thursday but it didn't work with my schedule.

To the OP - My range was delivered without any defects in appearance.

I've used the range mostly on Thanksgiving and the day before. So far I like it.

Upper Oven Temperature - I noticed it is taking a little longer to bake or convection bake in the upper oven. I installed an oven thermometer and I noticed that after the initial beep to set the temperature, the internal temperature is 50 degrees off from the desired temperature. For example, I want 400 degrees. When the beep tone sounds, the upper oven temperature is 350 degrees. After letting the oven stand for an additional 10 minutes, the delta drops to 25 degrees. I think my oven thermostats needs some adjustments. Has anyone else with a GE Cafe Dual Fuel experienced this?

Update: GE Customer Service called me last night and walked me through a simple procedure to recalibrate my oven. This is for the GE Cafe Dual Fuel with electric oven. I was able to readjust the oven thermostat via control panel, and the oven temperature now matches the digital readout within 5 degrees which is acceptable. They agreed to send me a more accurate oven temperature to better fine tune the temperature setting. Nice...

I know this thread is old but I figured I'd chime in. My cafe ag range was delivered last Tuesday. Guess what? The bottom oven door sticks out on the left side and doesn't close properly. Also, the right front burner has the same exact problem as Mike. I did notice that the delivery guys took it out of the box on the street and used two straps across the bottom to lift it into the house. I think this may be how the bottom oven door got bent out of position.

Mike, have you fixed your burner? I'm having a new range delivered on Saturday. I'll let you know how it works out.

We just received our GE Cafe Dual Fuel Range yesterday, and the right front, dual stacked burner does not work properly at all. We had the LP Gas conversion kit installed, and the other burners seem to work fairly well, though the flame in the center burner stays pretty small. The right front burner, which is one of the high output burners, and is dual stacked (dual flame), only lights with a tiny flame, barely low level, and does not adjust AT ALL. It does not go on high, or medium, or anything but just 'very tiny'!
Its sad that there seem to be so many quality problems so far, on this highly promoted, highly touted new GE Line. You call GE and they are like clerks in a hardware store...no idea what is wrong, and no one to refer you to. Huge GE Corp. has no technical assistance??? They WILL send a GE technician to look at the problem....in TWO weeks. So I spend tons of money on three major new GE Cafe appliances, take a big chance on this brand new line...and they could care less if you have big problems. We have not tested the ovens yet, and I am a little bit afraid to do so. I do not need more problems, and am angry enough already. Also the control knobs (cheap and lightweight) squeal like stuck pigs when you twist them. Very nice for a 'high end' appliance. Also our front left burner rocks slightly from side to side, and does not seat completely flat...and our installer is a pro, and tried every which way to keep it from rocking! YIKES!!!

I really do not feel like having another range carted in and assembled, so they better had be able to fix these problems! Any other issues similar out there???? Anyone using the dual fuel on LP Gas? Does anybody else have issues with these burners??? Thanks for any follow up!

I issued a complaint a couple of months ago. Since then I have once again burned my hand on my microwave. I purchased a GE CAFE set a few months ago. The individual units work fine, but when the microwave is above the stove/cooktop, the problem begins. The appliances are stainless steel. When using the burner below the microwave handle, for instance boiling water for pasta, the handle becomes so hot that it burns your hand if you try to open the microwave door. I had two GE authorized technicians check the product and the heat of the handle. Both technicians said that the handle was too hot for anyone to touch. They checked the UL rating and found that the UL rating maximum is a 131 and the handle was 135 after just a couple of minutes exposure to a pot with a medium boil below it. GE Technicians called in the findings and found that although they are aware of the issue, there is no fix. GE Customer Relations have been informed about this defect and told me that the solution was for me to "use a potholder" when opening the microwave door. I have burned my hand twice on this handle and am worried that my children or anyone else in my household will get further injuries. I spent well over $3,000 on these two appliances and would either like them fixed immediately, replaced or refunded. GE keeps denying any defects and continue to advise me to use a potholder to open my microwave door. BEWARE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE.

Went to install our new ge dual fuel range and found that two of the three racks were wedged do far back beyond the v shaped dropper that they couldn't be removed. Sucks. And we bought it over a month ago. Not sure whether they will accept it as a defect.

I've had the Café Series double oven for 2 years. The Igniter went out, and I had to replace it three times. After troubleshooting further, I notices the bottom of the oven pan had a hole melted through the heat shield. No idea why this is happening. One thing I will say is, I certainly did not expect this to happen in a 3500$$$ oven. GE is absolutely no help...Its a wonder why their stock is at 17....

GE appliances are a subsidiary of Haier, they're not owned by GE Corporation any longer. Almost a year ago was the sale.

I swore years ago I would NEVER buy a GE product again but here I am buying a GE range because I really liked the look of it. Now the range and oven seem to operate fine but from day one the smallest hint of gas is in the air if the range is not used. We called a GE repairman and he might as well have been a paper pusher. He knew nothing about the this range. It’s extremely frustrating and we’re really don’t know what to do at this point. Any suggestions?

Call a plumber, don't wait on GE to resolve a gas leak.

Yes, that sounds dangerous. You never want to smell gas in the house. Call your gas company asap. They'll come fi the leak (and have special tools to find it), because they don't want you blowing up the neighborhood either.

I hear you. It’s terrifying to think about a gas leak. We’ll try the gas company and see if they can figure it out. We’re pretty sure it’s the range. We bought a sniffer tool and it doesn’t pick anything up but you can definitely get whiffs of gas.

I boat and electric cook range GE from Best buy I'll let the store warranty run out that was only 3 weeks that ought to say a lot, after a month of dealing with it I had a service Guy come out and change a part it still did the same thing when he left had a new stove still did the same thing well I'm just going to push to get my money back GE is garbage

Not just you we have had three new ge electric ranges and they oven does not work on any. We had our breaker box and the outlet for the stove tested and we are getting the correct power. Of course ge won't own up to the problem.

Im so relieved to see this thread. i have also had three Cafe double oven ranges delivered in the past 30 days (almost 15 years after the original post). All three oven have had crooked doors - really off to the point where they do not close properly. i am now waiting to hear from GE on when they plan to deliver the fourth range. If I didn‘t have the matching appliances I would not get another one. With so many visible defects on the outside I cant imagine what the inside looks like. im so disappointed in GE - I’ve always thought very highly of their products.

what happened with your range? im

in same situation with the door— 2nd range delivered today with same issue. will be replacing it too

The doors are crooked on all of them. It's a design flaw that cannot be repaired. I know this because we went through four over the course of six months. Their support team is absolutely horrible and the technicians they sent were useless. I have never dealt with such a terrrible company before and will not be buying any of their products in the future. In the end, they could not fix it and we were able to get 10% of our purchase price back, so now we live with the crooked door. Stay away from GE and Cafe appliances unless you're a glutten for punishment.

We bought a Cafe double oven gas range. After the warrenty ran out, we started smelling Gas. We called a local appliance repair guy who changed out ignitors and some valves to no avail. He just gave up after $400. Called GE service: worthless. Said it was normal to smell gas. Don't know where to turn too. Anyone out there can help?

Mistake in buying a GE Cafe Range. The range pauses cooking because an error message reads the oven door is open, which it is not. A GE service technician came out the first time, inspected it for 5 minutes and ordered a new control panel. Another technician arrived to install the control panel, performed a diagnostic and said it was not the control panel, that the system was not calibrated upon installation. He reset the controls but did not install the control panel. Tried the oven again, same problem. It will preheat to desired temperature, food is placed in the oven to cook, THE DOOR IS CLOSED, but 5 minutes later it pauses cooking "because the door is open". Frustrating. There is nothing in GE's troubleshooting guide to give any assistance. Another call to GE to send a third service technician. Anyone else experience this issue?

DON'T BUY THE 36" GE GAS RANGE!!!! This is a $7,000 range (slide-in) that comes with plastic knobs that are breaking NON-STOP. Total design fail and it has to be a reflection of a blatant fail in engineering known for decades and an obvious cost cutting endeavor. Total trash. Bought a GE dishwasher to and the lower rack rollers keep snaping. GIVING UP ON GE.
