Induction and Griddle

After much research we have ordered a Miele induction cooktop. The only downside we are seeing is giving up a griddle like we would have had on a gas rangetop.

I am guessing what we will do now is put a griddle over two burners. Any hints on how to make this work well? We use our current griddle at least 3 - 4 times per week.

Check out the big round flat bottomed griddles you can put over your large element instead. There are a variety since induction became more popular.

Can I suggest an electic griddle? I have a Rival brand griddle -- it is large and heats evenly. I can use it at the counter and free up the stovetop to cook other things.

In my experience griddles (and grills) that cover more than one burner of different sizes usually have to many "dead spots" where there is no heat under it.

I've wondered about straddling two hobs with a griddle, but would hesitate to try it because one doesn't normally know how the more sensitive electronics are mounted under the glass. The manufacturers specify a maximum pan size, usually by a painted ring, that they believe is safe. The electric griddle suggestion and round griddle suggestion seem to be lower risk options.

For what do you use your griddle 3 or 4 times a week? Is it something that you can do on a large round griddle as stirfry suggested? Straddling a griddle over two hobs on an induction is probably not recommended. I just checked the "Operating and Installation Instructions" for my Miele KM 5773 induction cooktop and there is nothing about using a griddle over two hobs.

I suggestion you call Miele Technical Service & Support at 800-999-1360 (for customers in the US). In the summer I had a technical question so I called the Support Dept. and they were very helpful.

country_smile - Good suggestion. I will either call or email. I have emailed Miele with a few questions already, and they have been very prompt in their replies.

The chef at our applinace store has said he has laid a griddel across two buners on an induction. Perhaps I should ask him more about it as well.

We make pancakes, fried rice, ham slices, toasted buns, grilled cheese, quesadillias, etc. When we first got our JennAir I wonderd if we owuld use the griddle a lot, but we do.

Demeyere has a griddle (probably expensive) that is meant to use on two induction burners. I don't know how that makes Miele feel, though :)

I was at a Miele dealer yesterday and asked the same griddle question. This rep was regional VP for Miele in Northeast and has been involved with the company for 22 years. She sounded quite knowledgeable. She said Viking came out with a griddle pan that fits over the larger burner pretty well. Just the very edge of corners did not contact the burner. Not sure of the price of pan as I am at the stage of designing and between Miele and GE profile for induction - leaning towards Miele.
