They're supposed to be hidden, you activate it by pushing the on switch and pushing the door shut. No need to see the controls thereafter. Tell him to RTFM.

Here's ours. It's not built-in but the controls are "hidden". You operate it by pushing the buttons while the DW is open and then pushing "Start" and closing the door. It starts up a few seconds later. We do, however, have the status lights on the outside...my DH wanted that and since he does most of the cleanup, he got what he wanted!

No picture but you are right. On my last integrated Bosch DW you could not see the controls until you opened the door. They should be hidden.

I wish I had a picture of me with one of the ones I opened when they were running, LOL.

I can understand your husband. I want to see everything in a kitchen and know where it is when I walk into it, and I want to KNOW what is going on at any point in time when I look at the DW.

This may be a silly question, but how DO you know when it's finished and ready to be unloaded? I just ordered one like this, never thought about this point.....

Depends on the model. The Miele has a small lamp on the bottom that shines on the floor. When it goes out, it's finished.

Yes, I believe all integrated Mieles have an in-process light. A custom panel should allow for this. Our Miele Excella has its light at the top right side, and our door panel obscures it, but we can still see a red glow in the crack between the door & countertop. Some family members don't remember to check for the light, so we usually place a clip or towel on the DW handle to signal usage. (We have two DWs & we usually alternate them.)
