Ugg boots on a 50 year old???

OK, I personally think Ugg's are cute. I like they way they look on tiny teenage girls with leggings or skinny jeans tucked into them.

I don't wear leggings or skinny jeans because I think I look ridiculous in them. So, here's my drama. My son bought me a pair of Ugg boots for Christmas - they're the shorter ones with the one button on the side. He thought I could wear them to my son's hockey games etc. I do love my Ugg slippers that I wear around the house.

Anyways, one of my pet peeves is women who wear things that are way too young for them. I have them on now with my boot cut jeans - not tucked in and they are very comfy, not the most stylish look but ok.

Should I keep them or return them? I figure he could use the money back on his credit card for something else! But am on the fence as to whether I should just keep them and wear them and being self conscious that I look odd in them.

OK I'm rambling, but I think you get the jist! What do you think???

absolutely wear the ugg boots! I think they're very cute.

auntjen and bumblebeez, the boots you showed are fantastic.

    caroloh,
As long as you're not wearing a button that sez something like 'Kiss me I'm 50', no one will know you age. If you like the boots, wear 'em.

You should also consider, would it hurt your son's feelings if you tried to return them? Be flattered, he thinks you're young enough to wear them!

I live in ankle boots all winter. I don't ever tuck things in for 2 reasons. One, I only wear boot cut pants and they fit over boots, hence their name. And two, I have short legs so the last thing I want is to interrupt the (short)line I have going.

I bought these this year (from Nordstrom's on sale, half the price of Zappos and free shipping). I love them and find them to be incredibly comfortable.

golddust - please spill the brand (and maybe the Sierra Trading Post item number!) of those magical jeans!

I agree that you should absolutely wear them and look into some slim (they don't have to be skinny) jeans to tuck into them. With a long sweater it's a great look for those of us who are a bit more grown up. I am wearing skinny black pants tucke into gray knee high boots with a longish chunky knit sweather.

And Jen, you can't simply post a picture of such fabulous boots without a link to let us know where to buy them!!

Here they are - thank you google image search!!!

i too wear ugg type boots with leggings or jeans (but, most of my jeans are a more narrow leg-i'm not crazy about the flared jeans...)--i don't think of uggs as being particularly young looking...just comfy!

i personally think a short boot with a heel would look better with a skirt than the ones you picture, bumblebeez...(i can see auntjen's with a skirt...)

I know, busy, but I can't wear heels. It's frustrating!

There are many styles of Uggs now. Maybe you can find an Ugg boot that is different from the traditional Uggs boot. That being said, I am 63 and love my Ugg boots. I don't feel that I am too old for them at all.

I don't care for ugg boots in general so I can't give a fair answer to your question LOL.

I do take notice of women dressing too youthful for their age (and too old/dumpy for their age too). It's a fine line to look stylish but not like you are trying to stay forever 29 or on the other hand, look like your granny.

I work on a college campus and try not to wear the same things the "kids" wear. LOL I figure that's a good guideline. If a 20 year old is wearing it, it's probably a bit youthful for me (not speaking of classic pieces, more trendy pieces). I personally feel like the real skinny jeans and leggings are too youthful looking for me. I'm 50 myself. I am not a fan of the true "skinny" jeans except on the youngsters. I do like a narrow jean. It all depends too on what you wear with the skinnies or leggings.

Those are cute boots Bumble, but I would not wear them with skirts.

I agree with dlm about the look working with your age, body type, etc. Some can make it work, some just look like they are trying (too hard) to look youthful. I would never be accused of dressing older than I am, but I also don't want to look like one of the students (LOL although I remember the days when I was confused with the students!).

    :(
They don't have Jen's boots in my size.

BTW, I would wear UGG boots, but they really are not attractive for large feet like mine.

I have to echo what vickij stated. I'm also 63 yrs young
and love my Uggs ("Brooks" short leather & suede in black)
and my black suede "coquette" style slippers...BTW, I wear
size 9.5/10...so, no petite feet here!

I scored some great boots yesterday. There is this building across the street from my office in NYC that is a catering hall type place. Once a year they have this gigantic shoe clearance sale. Went yesterday and got these boots for $89. Had never heard of brand (Morenatom) before but when I got back to my office, I googled them. Retails for $330! Sweet!

    {{gwi:1492369}}

I also love Jen's boots, but I cannot wear heels anymore. Recently tried to wear a pair of ankle boots I have that have a pretty small heel to work. By the time I got home, I wanted to cry! I commute on bus and walk from bus station to office in NYC. My feet were killing me!

I love bumblebees boots. What would you wear them with? The pretty uppers would be hidden under bootleg jeans.

I would wear them with floral summer skirts in spring, tights and sweater dresses or casual skirts in fall winter. And skinny jeans, long cardigans, that type of thing.
I like the way they have that rugged edge yet the floral laser cut flowers soften and feminize.

I haven't bought them yet, they're kinda pricey and I'm, still on the fence. I don't NEED them, haha

Those are great boots, Jill! And such a good deal.

Ik, they are Bootheel brand jeans. Stretchy and comfie like sweat pants. You need to wear a belt with them but they are flattering and don't shrink. Don't buy up a size. In fact, I went down a size.

actually, b, they might look nice with tights and a chunky (maybe belted) sweater dress! and maybe a long casual skirt...mid calf or so...they'd be great with skinny jeans and sweaters!
i still can't picture with lightweight or springy looking skirts or anything too short...but, then again, who knows-i'm no fashionista!

If you're on the thin side and tall enough to pull off wearing a narrow leg jean, I say go for it. What I've seen lately, and makes me cringe, are women who are 50 plus, carrying a bit of extra weight and wearing narrow legged jeans tucked into a pair of Uggs. I don't think it is a very flattering look.

It's not so much the age as the body style. IMO you need to be pretty tall and thin to pull off the chunky look of Ugg boots regardless if they are shorter or taller.

I love Uggs. I don't own boots, but rather, a few pair of the Ugg mocs/driving shoe. Love them since the young girls aren't wearing them so there's no question of whether I am wearing something that is too young for me. Also, I'm only 5'7", so for me, either height isn't an option.

So, if you're in great shape (thin) and on the taller side, I say go for it.

I am probably in the minority, but I don't think low boots and skirts work very well together. If I want to wear something other than a higher cut boot (like a riding boot), I will opt for a pair of flats with opaque black tights when wearing a winter skirt.

    Jen, cute boots.

Bumble, very cute boots, where did you find them? I prefer low to no heels also. My first thought was that they would look great with a sweater dress or denim and then I found this outfit with ankle boots (on a mature woman!)at soft surroundings:

I was just getting ready to post the Zappos link, but I see dlm handled that for me! ;-D The heels on these "Not Rated" boots are a little taller than what I'm used to, but they are extremely comfortable.

Speaking of comfort, I'll be taking these to England with me again in a couple of months. I bought them for my trip there last year and they were just wonderful - like walking on a cloud! They're cute worn with jeans (untucked) or leggings (tucked), and even look really good with longish skirts. I can't say enough good things about these boots. They're definitely faves of mine!

I don't think its so much age that is in question as much as if they look good on you. If you feel comfy in them, you should just keep them.

The other thought that comes to mind is they were a gift from your son, and I can only assume he was really stoked about finding such a cool gift for his Mom. How great is it that HE feels they are appropriate for you.

My mother used to return the gifts I'd get her with the excuse that I should just keep my money. I'd put a lot of thought and care in trying to find the perfect "whatever" and her responses would really hurt my feelings. I also resented that she felt I was too much of a pauper to be able to afford something nice. That's why I never return the gifts my daughter gets me. No matter what I will find a way to use them whether they are in my taste or not.

Love all the responses, and I hadn't thought about his feelings being hurt by my returning them. I think I'll keep them.

At first I think I'll wear them untucked, but might be persuaded to get a straight leg pair of pants to bum around in and to wear with my uggs.

Thanks everyone. I like being able to run something like this by my cyber friends! I feel I'll get a more truthful response than asking some of my IRL friends who might just say what's the nice thing but not what they're really thinking in order not to hurt my feelings!

Very nice, Kelly and just about what I had in mind. And sort of a modified Sundance catalog look too, though not quite so frilly.

I can't tell anyone where they are yet, not at least until I decide to get them or not. There is only one left in my size and they are an obscure brand that I've never heard of before.

How great that you get to go back to England Jen. Are you going in the fall? Summer?

I agree with you, work, about the tall and thin, two things I am, and that's kinda nice, but I skip heels because of it. I don't like being an amazon. I do see women a little too plump to wear skinny jeans and for some reason it doesn't stop them! Why, I can't figure out, maybe they are much more self assured than me.

I like that pic Kelly! I'm not a boot person to start with - I like the look on others but I am way too warm natured and do not like my feet so covered up. I wear boots only a few times a year LOL. Definitely not in spring.

Yes, I agree about the extra weight and skinny jeans. My sis is 48 and my BIL told her he thought leggings were fine as long as she wore a top that covered her crotch. LOL He said it kills him how some wear them so tight in the crotch area.

    tina

Bumblebeez, we'll be visiting Cornwall and Devon in March. I can hardly wait! :-)

Tina, your BIL's comment is too funny! I tend to agree with him. I have several pairs of "jeggings" and always feel like I have to wear a top long enough to cover that area, because otherwise, it's just entirely TMI.

I adore that skirt kelly! Why, it would match the pillows I've been wanting!

Just the fact that my son picked them out and bought them for me would make me keep them -especially because it sounded so thoughtful the way he thought about you being cold at the ice rink. And I would wear them too, and make sure he knew how warm they are!

You have raised a nice boy there!

Glad to hear you're going to keep and wear the Ugg's. I turned 50 this year and got some red cowgirl boots for Christmas from DH (I picked them out). I love them!

I am almost 60 (jeepers, I am saying that a lot lately) and have multiple pairs of Uggs. I wear them with skirts, jeans (not tucked in, even though I am not overweight at all), and slacks. I love them, don't dress too young, and have nice warm feet!

    Wear them and be comfortable.

I am heading towards 60 too and have been wearing Uggs for years. They are great for older women as they are comfortable and warm, so why shouldn't we wear them!
I wear mine with skinny tucked in jeans with a longish sweater or cardigan over or under boot cuts or with knitted dresses and tights. Love 'em! I am average height and slim so figure I can wear anything within reason.

I wasd out shopping today and saw some Uggs on sale. I would definitely wear them and I am a lot older than you! Wear them and enjoy them.

Turned 60 in December and got my first Ugg boots for Christmas. Honestly, Uggs are not pretty in my opinion; however, they are warm, comfortable, easy to get on and off. We have had one small snow here in Kentucky and I was so excited to wear my Uggs.

They sit by the back door, will probably be used a lot, running in and out of the house, errands, etc - kind of like my favorite flip flops in the summer :). It will have to be really cold before I will wear them all day.

Not my business what someone chooses to wear. I hate age limitations.

Jen, are you going to be able to visit the village where Doc Martin was filmed? I think it was you who got my husband and me hooked on that show. We are waiting for the new series.

Terriks, that is Port Isaac and unfortunately, we will be further south - not far from Penzance. I'd love to see that quaint little village where the show is filmed, but just not sure we'll make it that far up the coast, as there's a lot we want to see in the immediate area where we'll be staying. We are greatly anticipating the new series too. Just can't wait to find out what happens now that Master Glassen-Ellingham has arrived! :-)

I do think there is an element where we all want to look good, and while the final result is guaranteed to cross the board from frumpy to mod (I hate llbean, you love it, etc.), the most important thing is how a person feels about themselves. Clothing should build confidence and leave the wearer with the feeling that they look good- not necessarily "better" than everyone else, but that that they are being true to themselves.

If someone has that reassurance and awareness, then, who cares how they dress?

I read many fashion blogs, fabulous over forty, linked below, is a favorite, but ultimately, how I feel about what I wear, which acknowledges my social network and lifestyle, is most important.
There will always be someone in life who criticizes us, but remembering the people who forged their own path in life, those are the memorable ones- the ones who stood out in history.

And in a teeny tiny way, that applies to our attitude towards clothing too.

Thanks so much for posting that link, Bumblebeez! I think I'm really going to enjoy that blog! Have never seen it before.

    Thanks, Jen!
I hope you have a wonderful trip and if you haven't read it, you really need to read "Notes From a Small Island" by Bill Bryson. I LOVE that book.
Someday, I hope I make it over there, although I really want to go to Austria.

    I probably shouldn't say anything, because this is a 50y/o Male's POV...

Sorry, but I just can't stand most Ugg styles! I don't think they flatter anybody. It's just ME...so don't read ANYTHING into it!
The boots AJ showed though DO look kinda hot! Those don't remind me of Uggs.

    Another random fashion-thing that Faron CAN'T STAND...those Afghan/"shawl" tops...
    Oh jeez, I'm gettn' ILL...;-)

    Faron

Oh, Faron, we KNOW what you like! But not all women dress to please some type of male fantasy.

For people like myself who are much smaller than the now "average size" women ....fashion is not always possible. I wear a children shoe size 1.5/2 and women shoe size 3.5/4. If anyone ever shopped for these sizes one would know most of my options are at "STRIDE RITE"..... a shoe store that for kids. Therefore I wear stuff that is some what comfortable and usually has loads of room for growing.

LOL Faron! I think you might mean ponchos?

    tina

Oh, Faron. My DH hates shawls, ponchos and even scarves, while I absolutely love them. He insists they make a woman look like an old lady or an Olson twin. I maintain that they're fashionable and can be just downright cute. Besides, don't you know that most of the time we women dress to impress other women? I have found that most men have the ability to quickly look past the clothes, if you know what I mean. And I know you do. ;-)

Texted my son I was wearing my Uggs and they were very comfy. He was very pleased....ðÂÂÂðÂÂÂðÂÂÂ

    Bumble-
I wasn't even HINTING at the angle you're addressing....Sheesh! I was speaking ONLY about the Ugg-appeal, or lack thereof! NOT how Women should dress.

    Tinam-
    LOL....oooops! Yes...that's what I meant! Poncho's! YUCK!
I think even Sofia Vergera would look like Hell in a Poncho...but that's just ME!

    AJ-
Yep....I DO view the person separate from what they're wearing! I'm not THAT shallow, believe-it-or-no!
I stand with your DH on this one!
    In a humorous vein....if there was a couple of Fashion-articles I could ban/destroy, Poncho's would be one of-'em!!
    "Kitten-heels" would be another.... >>>

    ;-)

Shorter boots are skirts are a hard look to pull off, unless you are very long legged and slim. The boots visually cut off your legs and make them look shorter. I have seen very few women who can pull off this look.

I'm 5'11, when I was younger I had naive professors tell me I should model, but I wasn't pretty enough for that and photograph horribly. (My face is not symmetrical enough)
But I might not be thin enough now, sniff.

Know what the "look" of Uggs with shorts/mini-skirt is called?
    Eska-Ho.

hee, hee, hee...I never heard that expression! Next time I see that look on some bipster I'll probably start laughing and look like a crazy, old woman. Oh well, I am what am I.

I would wear them to the hockey game like your son suggested. Maybe wear them with a sports jersey and leggings.
