Older women part 2 - EYEBROWS

I was thinking about this as I looked at our pictures. I think shaping of the eyebrows is also important in keeping our looks up. Part of grooming, so to speak. Sometimes I will see those before/after pics where someone's brows have been professionally groomed and boy can it make a difference!

My problem is, I am losing my brows! It's noticeable because I have very dark hair and brows. I MUST fill in about halfway out (toward the outer end of my eyes)or it would look strange. I've never had bushy eyebrows and they've not needed much plucking over the years, but they are really thinning now. I wonder if there is Rograin for brows? LOL

So, do you have a brow problem?

Mine are starting to come in silver. I am not sure what to do about that. Do I let them stay silver to go with my hair?

I'm guilty of very bad brows. I had them strung once and thought I was going to die of pain. Never had them plucked either.

    Tina -

I think you can use Latisse (prescription drug used to increase eyelashes) on your eyebrows.

I get my upper lip and brows threaded every 5-6 weeks.
My brows were never heavy but as Tina has stated I
also have to fill in the "outer ends" since they are
    very sparse.

If Latisse if for eyebrows, I need to try it. I have blondish eyebrows, so I put a darker taupe shadow, feathered in the sparse places. I have mine waxed about once a month, and have for years. (along with my upper lip) Makes such a difference to me, anyway.

Roseabbey - I know the problem! My brows are also coming in white/silver at the edges. I complained about this to my hairdresser and she gave me a tube of Maybelline Brow Styling Gel. You "paint" it on (it's just like a mascara wand) and it adheres to the hairs and it's fantastic! My brows are restored. It and lipstick are my two makeup essentials.

The only place I have found it is on Amazon, but I can't get the link to work, but you might google it yourself. I use a soft brown color.

sable, thanks for the tip, but I am not sure if I want to color them or not. Would I look odd to have silver brows?

I have thought recently about dying my eyebrows, I can't keep plucking out the silver ones forever!
I would love to have bushy eyebrows though just so I could shape them- eyebrow pain has never bothered me but a stray hair, eeeww- I'm obsessed with any stray facial hair.

The Maybelline product sounds interesting, I'm going to look for it.

Roseabbey - Would you look odd with silver brows? Only you can answer that! If your brows are changing color throughout the whole brow, that might be fine. The problem with mine is that - if you picture the whole brow - from the high point of the arch and outwards, they faded into invisibility - giving me half a dark brow, which just looks strange. The Maybelline gel that I use completes the whole brow, goes on easily and stays on, and then washes off.

But coloring an entire brow might be a whole different issue. And silver is elegant...

    Good luck!

My eyebrows have a few white's that I have to cover with a bit of mascara. Also, I notice as I get older eyebrow pencils are just to harch for filling in. Instead I use gray eyeshadow (I have a few colors). I don't try to match my brow color I just try to create a shadow of fuller brow that looks softer.

Being a redhead, My lashes and brows have always been blonde. So i have always used a soft brown pencil. THey have been thinning as I age, but I found that when the doc put me on meds for thyroid, they grew back. Seems that is one symptom of thyroid problems, the thinning of outer third of your brows.

I have always plucked my eyebrows. They were pretty thick as a teenager. Now I am careful to trim any that get too long (don't you love getting old?). I have them colored when I have my hair colored every 7 weeks. The color is lighter than the natural color, otherwise they look too dark and heavy, except for the grays, of course! If I get a gray between colorings, I pluck it out.

Yes, my brows have definitely thinned with age. I really don't have to wax them anymore, but I need to have upper lip done. Lovely.

What product works well and looks natural is Benefit brow wax pencil.

I color my brows at the same time that I color my hair. I get them professionally shaped every three months or so and keep them plucked and trimmed between shapings.

I go to the salon every three weeks to have my hair colored and my hair dresser also dyes my eyebrows. What's interesting though is that the color doesn't last as long on eyebrows as it does on the hair on your head. By week two it's gone. My hairdresser said that it's because the texture is different.

dedtired -wow - 7 weeks between color. I envy you. I started getting gray hair in high school and by 40 I was nearly completely white.

My thinning hair applies to my brows as well. I get them shaped and tinted every six weeks and pluck conservatively in between. I could probably handle a tint every three weeks like Maire does but I don't think I could keep that schedule up. I also use a taupe colored eye shadow to fill-in where necessary.

As you age the eyebrow does wear on the outer edge. I was glad to hear this as I thought I was the only one losing my eyebrows!!

Maire, sometimes I use that Root Renew between visits to the hairdresser. It costs a bloody fortune to get my hair cut and colored so I try to stretch it out. Also my hair is blonde so the gray isn't quite apparent.

Yes, as I am losing hair from my eyebrows and eyelashes, I am gaining them on my lip. Aaaargh.

I do have thinning and a few gray eyebrow hairs.

The worst is not being able to see the strays to pluck- it drives me nuts. I hate the thin eyebrows with lots of strays look.

At least we don't get nose and ear hair, like men do.

I hate going every 3 weeks but I'm too vain to allow my white roots to show because then it looks like my hair isn't attached to my head! I usually only get a cut every few months and since my hairdresser is only a few miles away if I'm only getting a color I just leave after the shampoo and do without the blow out.

I wouldn't mind the thinning eyebrows so much if they were at least on the same schedule. However my left one is much thinner than the right and hardly has any hairs left toward the end. So if I forget to apply a brow liner I look askew!

I tried Latisse on my eyelashes and eyebrows. It really made my lashes long but not darker. I didn't see any change on my eyebrows. Mine have also thinned at the ends and I use a light brown brow pencil to extended them just a bit.

I am also getting a few white brow hairs. I pluck them for now. I did get a type of brow mascara that worked well for darkening my brows.

I think nice looking eyebrows is important to a woman's looks.

My brows have always been light since I'm blond w/ very fair skin, and I've found that eyebrow powder does the trick for me.

Another thinner eyebrow here. I use the Revlon #2 brow gel. One end is the pencil to fill in and make fuller, then use the other end (mascara-like brush) to neaten up and fully color those brows that have gone gray. Works like a dream, no smudging, stays on well. I am sure there are other similar products. While I don't mind filling in with the pencil, the wand really applies color more evenly and gives a finished look to the brows.

Plucked and groomed my eyebrows for years and years.

Used an old soft toothbrush to brush them -- in both directions. Brush-Brush-Brush .... REALLY works! :)

Use a variety of soft brown pencils to VERY lightly color the hairs -- which are now so light-gray-white that my brows appear invisible. Keep the pencils well sharpened -- and try just VERY lightly dragging the SIDE of the color tip along your brows.

As a redhead -- my natural hair lost its own color in the early 1990s and I have been coloring it since then to ashy-shades of blonde.

I read YEARS and YEARS ago (LOL!) that brows should extend to the outer corner of the eye -- and curve lightly.

Does anyone remember the old tip about holding a regular pencil against the side of your nose to gauge to starting point of your brows -- and then holding the pencil at an angle from the side/bottom edge of your nose and to the end of your eye to gauge the end of the brow? And after years of observing brows on older gals -- I must agree with that tip!

I haven't read the replies yet, I'll go back and do so in a bit.

I think as we age our eyebrows become softer. I know mine has. I loved how they used to be course and they'd lay flat.

But now I have to use mustache wax on my brows! lol. Seriously, it's the best wax for eyebrows to keep them in shape all day. That's because I sleep on my side and when I wake up, I always have a few hairs standing straight up and the wax is the only thing that keeps them down.

I need to have mine professionally done, but I'm afraid they'll screw them up. I have a very unusual arch, not sure if you all have noticed, so I have to be careful plucking. Which I need to do, btw. lol

I agree about the colored eyebrow gels. I use those every now and then. They look like mascara and has a brush just like it. What's nice is it gives a very subtle and darker color to the brows.

I wear glasses for reading. A couple of weeks ago I was putting my mascara on and noticed my new tube wasn't putting out much color. I looked at it and I was using my eyebrow gel! lol

I have thyroid disease and one of the common side effects of this disease is you lose about the outer third of your eyebrow. I finally decided to have permanent makeup done and it was a wonderful decision. I love it. I was very careful to find just the right person to do it as I didn't want it to look "fake." Did I tell you how much I love it?

Vicki, would you post a pic? I'd love to see it.

I too had the eyebrows missing but then I had my thyroid checked and that was the problem. With treatment they came back. I'm a blonde with blonde eyebrows so I color them and then use a pencil while it's wearing over and over that a clear gel which keeps them in place and also the color doesn't come off as easily.

I should be ashamed to admit it but I am not. I have never posted a picture. I don't know how. Maybe it is time?
