Dell flat panel computer monitor

I have this Dell flat panel computer monitor that is about 5 years old. At times, it seems that the "light" is about to burn out in it because at times half of the screen is blackened out. Other times the screen is lit up and bright like it should be.

I'm not very knowledgeable about flat panel displays but is there a way to replace the light source without it costing a small fortune??
