Is that the only placement for the bed? If not, then put it on the wall without any windows. Paint the wall behind the bed DARK---add crown molding---keep the headboard light---lamps or hanging pendants... Good Luck!

How wide is the room & how large is the bed? Right now the room appears long and narrow and I'm not sure if that's actually the case. From your pictures I'm guessing the entry door is across from the dresser. Is re-orienting the bed on the large wall an option, or will you lose space to walk around? You could create a nice reading/sitting under the window that the bed is under now. An accent wall of color is a great idea if the rearrangement is feasible. I would use the large wall as your bold color wall and the other walls in softer or more neutral colors. Here's where you can have fun with bedding and tie in all the colors, neutral and bold. For the wall nearest the where the dresser sits now, you can consider either an appropriate sized writing desk or book shelves with minimal accessories on top. Either way I think a floor plant or some greenery will add to the look and feel of the room. I love your clear glass lamps, whatever you decide keep those. Window treatments on both sets of windows & you should be on your way to lovely cozy retreat you both can enjoy.

the room is 11x19, so yes you are right it is long and narrow and correct, the door is across from where the ugly dresser is now. The bed is a queen and there is space that it could be easily reoriented. The previous owners had the bed on the wall with no windows but it felt like it got lost there. I like the suggestion of the dark bold color on that wall, it might help!

I see that you have blues on the wall. Nice colors. Since the room is dark, I would go with a lighter version of a blue that I like. A nice blue-grey would be very nice for the room. You like strong colors and you can always add the darker shade on the wall with the window as an accent wall. Tan is another great wall color. With tan, you can add accents in the darker colors in curtains, panels, pillows or in a rug if you add one. The possibilities are unlimited. Let us know which color you choose. Post pictures, please! I would also add night stands that are the same height. Your room is long and narrow. Would placing the bed on the long wall be an option?

I'm an interior decorator and I have a few ideas. Dark colors can have a bold impact on a room and light can be created with lamps, chandeliers and mirrors to reflect the light already in the room. I would put a bold curtain that covers the back wall and put the curtain rod near the ceiling. This will give the illusion that you have a large window. Like in the first picture I've posted for you. In the same picture the bed is on the wall next to the window and I think your room would look good like this as well. ......Then get some colored or printed pillows to add style like in the second photo. This will also brighten the room. Change the main light fixture to a well lit chandelier and keep your lamps on the night tables. Is there room for a tall dressing mirror that could reflect some natural light? Like in the third picture? I hope this is helpful....Happy Decorating!!!

This room has a great feel. Move the bed to the wall without a window. Don't be afraid to paint the whole room one of the nice calming blues you have sample painted on the wall as opposed to one accent wall. I think you will find the room opens up rather than closes in. I love the trunk at the foot of your bed. Move it to your reading nook instead . Don't worry about finding matching night stands. Pick two that you love that are unique to continue a collected look of timeless furniture pieces like the trunk. I believe you should then match the lamps with textured shades. You might want to consider a taller headboard with fabric and nail heads. I like the simplicity of your comforter but if you add some big big square euro pillows to make your feel more inviting and cozy. Choose a clean long drape that compliments both the wall colors and bedding colors to provide unity. Leave your rug in the same place that is currently is when you move your bed to the other wall. Have fun! Please upload pictures of your new sanctuary when you are finished.

Thanks Sherri! Love the mirror ideas. We do have space for a long dressing mirror (or 2 like in the photo). Are you saying that if we move the bed to the wall with no windows, we should still use a "wall of curtains" on the window walls (here is the same small window on the opposite wall which could easily handle a bold curtain that goes floor to ceiling and crosses the full wall)? Or is your curtain suggestion if we keep the bed under the window?

Good eye lessismoore! I agree with you,the bed should be lower to show more of the headboard (which is off white leather tufted, and is lovely!). The bed is a platform and is designed to not use a boxspring so it should be lower. my husband is determined to use the boxspring, so this has been an ongoing battle. Perhaps your outside perspective will help convince him to ditch the boxspring! thank you!

Thanks megparillo - As we can all see, all the headboards shown are much higher in relation to bed ... I think there are box springs which are less deep available these days to accommodate this issue (had same problem with a nice antique bed set and new deep pillow top mattresses!) Or maybe, find a way to just raise the headboard? However, even with new nightstands, they would be too low. Best of luck - otherwise, you have some great suggestions here!

Why not choose your rug first. There are some beautiful and affordable ones. That will set the tone for the room and then pick the paint.

Sure you could do both walls of curtains with the bed in the middle wall. It would look very elegant....If the walls are dark make sure your curtains are lighter... or mostly light with a darker print. I also love the art behind the bed in this picture that I posted earlier. It would complement your bedding nicely. By the way if your husband insists on the high bed you need to raise the headboard so it doesn't look out of place.

moving the bed to the wall with no windows will be perfect, and a nice dark color like navy,teal or charcoal, light colored bedding, mirrors and lamps with white shade, your rug looks ok with any of those colors, it should be placed "horizontal" under the bed not length wise under the bed,and does not need to be under the whole bed., don't forget to post pictures of your finished room

I love the bed under the window...yes, I would lower it though. I also suggest you keep the room a light color such as cream or a bold yellow to lighten the room. I would keep the ceiling the same color to heighten it. Because the room is long and narrow I recommend a loveseat, a bench,or a pair of chairs and table or ottoman at the foot of the bed...or a desk with a desk chair facing the bed. Perhaps a dresser or dressing table at the other end...or reading area or even small breakfast area... whatever use best suits you. I am attaching some photos with the bed at the window to give you some ideas... Hope they help! :)

Here are 2 photos of a bold sunny yellow...please do the entire room and ceiling the same color. An accent wall is too timid and tends to visually shrink he space. :)

We still have more to do: curtains, crown molding, paint the rest of the room and buy new nightstands... but we are progressing thanks to all of these helpful suggestions! Keep em coming!

I love the blue paint and your bed on the wall without the window. The rug is perfect. Love your lamps. Find more substantial nightstands and don't be afraid to not have them match one another. Hang a picture, canvas or great mirror above each nightstand just behind your lamps. Silk curtains would make your room luxurious. I look forward to seeing more photos of your project.

How about low dressers on each side instead of nightstands? You have plenty of room and the lamps would look less cramped. I could see some pictures in a row with white mats above the headboard. You need another picture or two to hang with the one near the window--looks a bit small and lost there by itself. Love the chair and ottoman.

It's looking so much better already!!!! The blue wall has a very nice impact. The comments above are right.... you need bigger lampstands by the bed. You could pick up some at a yard sale and paint them white! Some printed pillows too (I love Winners store for a nice variety of pillows if you have one nearby) And again a few white picture frames with white mats and black and white photos above the bed. Very nice rug!! Makes for a cozy room! Don't forget to raise the headboard about a foot higher than it is now.... I also agree that the little picture looks lost. You either need one long tall mirror or picture there or two pictures the same size one above the other. Great start to a wonderful room!!!! Keep posting pics for us as you go!!!

Love the color choice, nicely done. I like with the suggestions of dressers on both sides of the bed and larger lampshades. Consider artwork after you've raised the headboard, you'll want the size and position perfect. I agree others regarding the artwork, it's to small and getting lost. Sherri's idea of two the same size one over the other is good, or maybe a tall floor plant nicely uplit in the corner behind the trunk may work. You'll want some plants/greenery for finishing touches. Pillows in different textures in white and/or blue (maybe one yellow just for fun and a pop of unexpected color), and a fuzzy throw for the chair/ottoman. Good work so far, lovin' the progress.

Hi - the room is shaping up great. I must have too much time on my hands :-) Anyhow, I took the liberty of raising your headboard to its proper status, adding the mirror behind the lamps, getting you a bigger nightstand -chest, the photo collection above the bed, some throw pillows... and through in a side table for your chair and plant for balance. I don't think the topiary is the right "tree" but it needed something (maybe a larger print, something with a bit of red - to tie in that throw on the chair? or a floor lamp for the chair?) In this "visualization" it almost feels as if the chair makes for an entirely different statement, more masculine, less "feminine?" I'd be tempted to go for an upholstered slipper chair/ottomon combo in a lighter color ... what do you think?

I agree the chair has a more masculine feel, but maybe a less dainty dresser and a bolder pillow or more color in the art could tie it together too.

Maybe a longer mirror next to the chair rather than over the side dresser could be practical and help tie it together, and reflect softer light.

Love that chair and ottoman, and the trunk is more rustic too. Maybe the trunk can go under the window and a chair can go in the corner so it looks less lonely. The trunk is such a pretty piece.

I was thinking something pretty simple in a darker woodtone, like Mission, sort of 40's boys bedroom with big knobs, or a very straightforward piece from IKEA or something pretty neutral. The blue pillow is pretty, but maybe something similar with a bit of red in it could be nice.

Art, architecture, history and textiles have been my passions since childhood, so I guess you just pick up stuff along the way, plus having lived quite a few places. The internet makes it easy to research, but I wish there were more places that separated out true period detail from period inspired. Old renderings, museums and time-capsule houses, advertisements and millwork catalogues help with that. Antique Home Style. com, Old House Journal, Flicker are good sources too.

Hi Victorian: I like the pillows very much. Just a touch of the red. I switched out the pictures too, for a more "masculine" look, to better incorporate the lounge and throw, which are very nice all on their own. Also, made bed throw a khaki to echo the other throw, bigger in warmer woody tones. Not sure if the floor lamp works, but need something there ... maybe a more traditional style (brass) and in general, tried to adjust lighting for better color correction to "reality" (combo of sun and tungesten lighting here! ). Now, the bedside lamp (and I tauped up the shad there) seems a bit too light, what with the glass. But it's clear that with just a few alterations in accessories, the room can either have a very light or more rustic-lodge feel.

The lamps could be made into mercury glass with a DIY spray. There are directions all over the place--involves vinegar too I think. Especially if it can look a bit roughed up.

Those lamps seem so bright--maybe a lower wattage bulb would do, not a new shade? Or maybe a more textured or rustic type shade to contrast? And on both sides of the bed of course.

Bit awkward to have a third light--maybe an uplight and a plant? and have it wired so that it turns on with the overhead and in the other corner too? Or more of a reading lamp style? I think there are remote control switches to make it easier and no elelctrician required, but I'm no expert on this.

I was thinking a ladderback chair near the trunk could be nice, or maybe a lingerie chest and a bit of metallic.

I really like what you did-I wonder what Megparillo thinks? Might do something similar in my bedroom!

Well, she was saying it was rather dark bedroom, hence the reticence in doing such a dark blue, but the paint is definitely working :-). I think, with the lovely headboard (which I hope will get set on blocks or something) that the first visualization was more in keeping with that. If we are "crowdsourcing" suggestions, most people seemed to resonate with the lamps, the rug - and feel more substantial nightstands would help. The more glass, mirrors, metallic, shiny reflective bits used will enhance the overall light feeling in the room, but I feel they tend toward a lighter more feminine look (for a lack of a better word) than the more rustic "masculine" pieces - which tend to be darker (dark leather, dark or rustic woods). Okay, here's one more just for fun ...

Hi defever - I'm using Photoshop. You can extract images from pics and place them on various transparent layers. There is a bit more involved, but that's the essence.

I was also wondering how you get the realistic lighting effect. I just upgraded my Photoshop and I'm still getting the feel for it. I have created masks and used transparent paint layers, but I used to use the spray paint tool, and I don't see it anymore.

I actually find Picture It! easier for the architectural changes than Photoshop, but the color management and masking tools aren't as good. But it is a good deal cheaper. I guess I could use both if I really wanted to make the exteriors look the best.

Yes - all that would work, Like the driftwood color very much.
In real life and real light, the pillow might work - when you are doing comps, there is quite a bit of pixel differentiation between objects! Some things are just "sharper" ...

I'm in an older version of PS (6). On the lighting: On the lamp I added a "glow" effect, and on the wall, I dodged in an effect by hand to mimic the existing light effect from original pix.
I wish I knew where your sprayer (airbrush) went, but I've no idea from one version to the next :-)

I have seen these Bungalow5 white small chests that i have had my eye on, maybe those would work. There is a lot of space on either side of the bed, so i am wanting to do more chest style nightstands with a nice amount of storage and surface area, instead of small normal nightstands. Also, glad you like the trunk! We do too, my husband refinished it and it is just terriffic!
There were lots of questions around the chair. I really like the chair and ottoman and feel like the bedroom is a good spot in the house for it so am hoping to make it work in there. Since it is so deep, it is difficult to find another room with the right kind of space for it. But I dont want to room to go too masculine on me, so maybe switching out the blanket or some art behind it will help with that. Love the ideas of the artwork over the bed in the white frames, a really nice impact.
I was in a architectural reclaim store recently and spotted an old white door that had been mirrored in a few sections that was gorgeous and i think could be a really cool piece leaned up against the wall near the windows. That could be a tall piece to use where the topiary is in the photo. would help brighten up and also would be a really cool visual. may need to go back and buy that!
Curtains and nightstands are my next purchases, hope to settle both soon so i can get this room together!!!

PS- I really like some of the Bungalow5 pieces, but would rather not spend that amount of money. Would like better quality pieces than Ikea, but less than Bungalow. Any suggestions are welcomed!

I've had good luck with IKEA stuff--just avoid the really cheap stuff, and check out the drawer slides and whatnot. The Hemnes comes in white too, but I thought that was too much white with the bed and you needed something to contrast and to tie in with the chair.

How do you like the IKEA pillows? We thought they were perfect. And a lighter one for the chair might be just right.

World Market has nice furniture at pretty reasonable prices. Haven't checked out the dressers but worth a shot. Overstock has some nice stuff too, but I always check the reviews to make sure.

Lessismore That's right airbrush--I forgot what it was called. It used to be in the brush tools. Never used glow and using the dodge tool is brilliant.
