platform bed: no slats, anyone???

I have a question for all of you platform bed experts. I am currently sleeping on a 12-year-old platform bed (no idea about the brand). It has no slats, just a layer of continuous MDF in a frame. It is very comfortable!!! Many of the platform beds that I see online/in stores have the slats instead. Is the bed going to be less firm with slats as opposed to the continous platform??? I have some back issues, so a firm bed is a must. Thanks for your help

Look beneath the MDF--are you sure there are no supporting beams there--like maybe 4 or 5?

One of my beds has several metal beams which are then covered by MDF panels. (I had to move it to another room, so I had the job of disassembling and reassembling.) The bed was very comfortable, true!

My current bed just has 11 slats, not wooden ones but metal ones. And this bed has one mattress, not a mattress and boxspring (the bed and mattress are from Room & Board). It's also comfortable. I can't tell any difference.

At my sister's house, there's a platform bed that has the slats, too--wooden ones. The bed's from Ikea. I'm pretty sure that the slats are held together by a woven binding, so they come "rolled up" (you can check on the website). Before I slept on that bed, I always thought those slat things looked flimsy. One reason I thought so was because some Ikea products aren't great for the long haul. But I was pleasantly surprised.

I think it's more the mattress that makes the difference (this was one great firm Ikea mattress, but they discontinued it a few years ago).

The room and board bed you have is made by Amisco. Most beds today use slats. You only really need the mdf over the slats for visco beds. Any lumberyard can cut and delivery it to you (have it made in two pieces for if you have a tight stairway.)

Bed is about 20 years old. The base of my bed is four wooden boards making a frame that is about 7 inches shorter on 3 sides (feet, left and right sides) on which sits a 2 inch thick solid wooden board about 62" in width. This is what I like to call a true platform bed. You set the frames down, put the board on, the mattress sits directly on it and it is very solid. To make the bed is a breeze; I love it! I want to buy 2 full size of this description but haven't been able to find this type of bed anywhere. Ideas?

I have a platform bed with slats, but recently stayed at a hotel with a bed that had a solid wood platform, no slats, and oh the difference! I slept through the night and woke up with no pain. I am now looking for a bed that is solid, no slats. Definitely do not go for the slats and give up the solidity under any circumstances, especially if you have back issues!
