How do you fill in the gaps

I have an old wide plank pine floor in my house but the boards have shrunk with age. I would love to keep the floor because I love the colonial/rustic feel but I'm worried about spending the rest of my life trying to keep all the dirt from filling up the gaps. My husband and I were considering filling the gaps with clear silicone sealer and then urethaning over it all but i wasn't sure if it would work. Has anyone tried this??

Typically once wood is kiln dried it shouldn't move very much. During the winter time you will see some shrinkage but during the summer it should regain its width and thickness. If the gaps are filled during the winter you may have some weird issues when humidity allows the planks to regain their size. joel@eutree.com

    This seems like great advice.

I would try a humidifier in short time increments to see if the wood would swell to fill the gaps.

If you have gaps in your flooring, it must not have been installed or prepared properly. You will see some shrinkage during the drier months, but in the summer months it will regain its original width. I would not try to sillicone the flooring as this may interrupt the shrinking and expanding process. Please let me know if you have any questions .. info@antiquebeamsandboards.com
